By the same Author. Money and its Influence. Translated from the German of HOFFMANN. The Forest Cave; or, Revenge: A Tale for the Young. Translated from the German of HOFFMANN. The Alphabet for Daily Use. The Child's Alphabet. PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION. THERE are books with Scripture texts for daily use throughout the year, but, as the Words spoken by our Lord Jesus Christ do not appear to have been specially set apart for this purpose, my object has been so to arrange them that readers may be able to meditate day by day on a few of them, and on the great lessons they teach. The Words of Jesus as recorded in each of the Four Gospels will here be found apportioned to the four quarters of the year, and they who have time at their disposal may derive benefit from reading, in addition to the page for the day, the three other quarterly pages, thus: On January 1, the page for April 1, July 1, and October 1 ; on January 2, the page for April 2, July 2, and October 2; and so on throughout the year. Special pages will be found for the Church's chief Festivals and Holy Days. The notes taken from Bishop How's Commentary on "The Four Gospels," published by the Society for Promoting Christian Knowledge, and those from other authors, often necessarily abbreviated, have been selected in the hope of aiding the reader's meditations. To these an Index is now added, which it is thought may prove useful to clergymen and others. May God bless this renewed attempt to bring home His Son's Words with power to our hearts! 77 UPPER BERKELEY STREET, PORTMAN SQUARE, November 1880. ELEANOR PLUMPTRE. |
