the highest total, but in one or two cases a certain amount of nervousness might be detected, with which unlimited practice during the term cannot ensure a good score at the critical moment. Cross especially shot very pluckily, making 32; this with 24 at 200 yards made his total 56, consequently he represented us in the shooting for the Spencer Cup. Stanton's 53 is also very creditable when we remember that he only joined the Corps last term. The following are the individual scores of the Eight, and also the Schools in the order of merit

The competition for this cup, consisting of three stages, at 200, 500, and 600 yards, has been finished and the cup was won by Finch with the total of 210 over the three ranges; the winner shot well at 200 yards all through, and made one average of inners at 600 yards, but the shooting all through was not so good as might have been expected, however the weather may have accounted for this, as it was against good shooting on every day. The following are the scores of the first five :

they had to leave us to finish at the long range by ourselves. We were favoured with one of the few fine days we have had this term, and had we won the match the day could not have been more successful, unluckily our shooting at 500 yards was far from good, with the exception of Cross's 30, and we finally found ourselves to the bad by 18 points.

For the Cliftonians we may notice the scores of Second Corporal Threlfall 57, and Sapper Bidwell 53, and for us Cross made top score with 54, while Heaton and Finch made 50 each.

THE CLIFTON MATCH.

This year we met the Clifton Eight at Trowbridge, on Thursday, July 10th, as last year when we met them at Devizes they were so pressed for time that

After the match, Captain Jeston announced his intention of resigning the captaincy of the team in favour of some younger Marlburian, who would naturally be better acquainted with the capabilities of those shots from whom the team has to be selected. We must take this opportunity of heartily thanking Capt. Jeston for all his services to Marlborough in connection with this match, and we may add that in spite of all his exertions, the amount contributed by Marlborough to the Trophy is still considerably less than that given by any other school of equal standing.

The following promotions have been made, to take effect next term:

1st Lieut. Heaton to be Captain.
Sergt. Henniker to be 1st Lieutenant.
Private Elton to be 2nd Lieutenant.

Promoted into the Shooting VIII July 12th. E. G. Waddilove.

ART SOCIETY.

At the last meeting of the Art Society, various suggestions which have been lately received by the committee, were laid before the Society: but as by no means all the members were present, it was thought better to publish the new alterations at full length, for the benefit of all who may be interested in them.

1. At the last meeting in each term, eight subjects for illustration will be given out for the ensuing term, two for each meeting-of which only one need be illustrated. Members who are too busy to draw during the term will thus be able to prepare their contributions in the holidays.

2. Each contributing member shall adopt a number, to be placed instead of his name on his drawings when sent in :-the number and corresponding name to be sent to the President on or before the first meeting of each term.

3. All drawings sent in shall after each meeting be kept in the Society's Portfolio until the last meeting of each term, when there shall be an exhibition of all the work done during the term.

4. The Society offers each term a prize for the best study from nature, and a prize for the best original drawing-to be competed for by members of the College only: but in order to qualify for a prize, illustrations of at least three of the subjects must have been sent in. Also, a prize for the best paper on some subject connected with art, the subject to be given out at the same time as the subjects for illustration: the prize paper to be afterwards read before the Society.

5. The prizes shall be adjudged before the last meeting in each term by a committee composed of the President, the Secretary, and one other, not a working member of the Society. Should they however at any time consider the drawings seut in not sufficiently good to merit a prize, it would be withdrawn for that term.

With regard to rule 1, the following eight subjects for next term were given out at the last meeting: "An old bridge." "A quiet corner." "Sketch of an animal." "A treasure." "An old farm house." "Africa." "A dangerous coast."

It has also been thought advisable for the future to have lectures for the term forming a consecutive series on the same subject, such as different Art Processes, Schools of Painting, Sculpture, or Architecture, or any other subjects connected with Art: this is to be carried into effect next term by lectures on typical schools of painting, as illustrated by their greatest masters; and the first lecture will probably be given by the President, Mr. Baker, on Claude and Turner, and landscape painting as developed by them.

THE RUGBY MATCH.

ON Wednesday, July the 30th, the Marlborough and Rugby elevens met at Lord's. This year's match was looked forward to with especial interest; for, although the Marlborough batting was known to be weaker than usual, yet it was hoped that as in the Cheltenham match the bowling might win the day. The ground, however, was not suited to a slow bowler. The fine weather of the preceding days had brought the pitch into splendid order for run-getting. Rugby still further bettered their chance by winning the toss; though perhaps the advantage was not so great as it seemed. The fielding out first often gives a chance for any nervousness or overanxiety to evaporate.

At 11.23 Marlborough took the field, while Ward and Leslie appeared for the defence. Hardwick was the first to bowl from the nursery end; his field was thus arranged: Glennie point, Leach slip, Hill coverpoint, Booth mid-off, Hitchcock long-off, Stanton short-leg forward, Challen long-on, Kitcat long-leg, while the captain placed himself at short-leg. For Peake's bowling Glennie went to cover, Booth, long leg, Leach point, Hill long on, Challen

third-man, Hitchcock long-stop, Kitcat mid-off, Stanton short-leg, Hardwick mid-on, Bengough taking the wicket throughout.

The first three balls produced no result, but the fourth was snicked for 2 by Ward. Leslie put Peake's first ball for 1 to leg, and after a maiden over from Hardwick began to give us a taste of his quality by a fine on-drive to the Pavilion, and later on a fine square-leg hit to the scorer's box. However, after a couple more hits, one over Peake's head for 1, and a badly judged hit for leg for the same amount, Leslie was run out by a very fine piece of fielding on the part of Leach. 19, 1, 14. This encouraged our men and things looked still better when Ward was immediately after bowled by Hardwick. 19, 2, 4. Leggatt now joined Capron, and was nearly bowled by an unexpected fast one. Capron soon began to hit about in a fine free style, though once or twice he was near being caught, while Peake sent down some overs which were quite Spofforthian in their irregularity. One full pitch Capron smacked for 5.

When 20 runs had been made since the last wicket, Hill was put on and Hardwick changed to the Pavilion end. Capron, however, continued hitting in fine style, but Leggatt's career was cut short by Peake who caught
