IMES have often been to men, what the fire is to the gold, or the fan to the grain. In the late unhappy attempt to refcind the penal laws against Popery, your Lordship had the honour to fignalize yourself, in oppofing a measure. fo unfriendly to the Reformation-intereft. That laudable zeal and intrepedity which you expreffed, in espousing the Proteftant-cause, have given your Lordship a place in the hearts of thousands; and will, I truft, tranfmit your name with honour to late pofterity.
BUT while your Lordship's undaunted appearance in behalf of the truth, has juftly procured you the highest esteem of
her cordial friends, you have not been without honours of a very different kind. For the truth's fake your Lordship has borne a torrent of reproach: foon as you took her by the hand, enemies prefented you as with a cup of wormwood and of gall. You have had the honour to be dishonoured for your unfhaken attachment to the Proteftant-cause.
I HOPE, my Lord, that far from fainting, you shall be enabled to continue firm. as the rock amidst the foaming billows. Your Lordship well knows how heaven's high favourites rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer fhame for the name of Chrift *. The meek, the magnanimous, Mofes, efteemed the reproach of Chrift greater riches than the treasures of Egypt, having respect to the recompenfe of the reward †. I hope your Lordship has learned to make the like estimate; refting affured, that every stone caft at you, for the Saviour's fake, fhall be as a jewel in your crown, when he comes the fecond time.
