Mr. SIDNEY NAYLOR.

Accompanist A programme of such old favourites calls but for few comments. Mdme. Norman-Nóruda's playing was so delightful as to raise a feeling of regret that few more opportunities of hearing her will be offered this season. As an encore, which could not be resisted, she gave Spohr's ever-lovely Barcarolle-one of the most fascinating strains of pure melody that ever came from the heart of even Spohr, who was so rich in simple melodies.

Miss Zimmermann accompanied the violin solos with much discretion; and she was heard to especial advantage in the sonata of her choice. Her firm intellectual grasp of every detail made the performance a particularly interesting one. There was a delay before the last number on the programme, accounted for, when the audience began to show signs of im patience, by the announcement that the Serenade Trio had unfortunately been left behind, but that copies had been sent for, and would soon arrive. Such misadventures are rare at these concerts, and this one seemed to cause some amusement to the artists, whose parts had arrived, with some misplacements, which needed amending, after they had taken their seats to begin.

Mrs. Hutchinson sang with taste and some feeling; she has a pretty voice: her style is, however, too evidently studied and formal for her performance to be entirely pleasing.

Miss CARMICHAEL.

Accompanist The sixth and last quartet of the set dedicated to Prince Lobkowitz, Duke of Raudnitz, completes the list performed at the Popular Concerts this season. The original genius of the master is clearly revealed in this early work, notwithstanding many marked features of Haydn's style. This was the ninth performance at the "Pops" and, of course, the artists were recalled. The other concerted work, Schumann's Pianoforte Quartet in E flat, will always prove a magnet of attraction, but it is difficult, as often remarked on previous occasions, to understand why the intellectual Germans prefer this quartet to the immortal quintet in the same key. The quartet, first played at these concerts in May, 1865-for the "Populars" then ran on into the

summer months-had the advantage of being led by Mdme. Schumann, who, the public will regret to hear, cannot appear at all this season.

Mdme. Haas's merits and style of execution are sufficiently known. Her pianoforte solo is an old friend, with by no means a new face: I cannot think very highly of the theme as a theme; an opinion also applicable to Mr. Charles Hallé's pet piece, "Ich bin der Schneider Kakadu," and the "thirty-two variations" in C minor. Each variation is in a different key; the fifth in C minor is connected with the sixth in F major by a few bars in C major, the dominant of the new tonality. Mdme. Haas was encored, and thereupon played Chopin's Andante Spinato.

The choice of songs was good, and their execution, by these two favourites of the subscribers, excellent. A double recal followed the Shakesperean settings. Mozart's duet was played for the second time.

Herr Joachim, on Monday night (his second ap pearance) is to lead the third "Rasoumowski Quartet in C, and to play a Chaconne of Bach. Miss Agnes Zimmermann will be the pianist, but I regret to note only fugitive pieces of Schubert, whose fine sonatas still repose on the shelf.

A. M.

MR. WALTER BACHE'S CONCERT. A programme consisting entirely of Liszt's works must be arranged with more than ordinary care in order to avoid the impression among the audience that it is possible to have too much of a good thing at one sitting. Liszt, with all his large-heartedness and unbounded power of sympathy which go so far towards making him a grand artist as well as a model to future generations, expresses himself in a manner all his own, but it is a manner with which one requires to be conversant in order to appreciate the poetical feeling that always lies beneath the surface. Mr. Bache's devoted and well-directed enthusiasm can, however, always be trusted to arrange his Liszt festival as suitably as possible to the capacity of his intelligent audience. The "book," under the careful editing of "C. A. B.," is a genuine guide to the listener, and abounds in interesting information. It is strange but true, that such characteristics of an annotated programme are so uncommon as to call for a special word of praise.

The orchestra, led by Mr. Deichmann, and the choir had evidently worked with a will, and no effort was spared to make the difficult compositions as clear as possible. The concert began with the "Rakoczy" March, the same old Hungarian march as is introduced by Berlioz in "Faust," but here treated in a far more elaborate and a truly symphonic manner. The programme explains that Liszt, with his well known generosity, on finding that Berlioz had selected the same subject, withheld his own wonderfully spirited and exciting arrangement from publication till after Berlioz's treatment had (after his death) gained wide popularity.

This was followed by Liszt's first pianoforte concerto, conducted by Mr. Dannreuther, Mr. Bache rendering the solo part with all that heartfelt earnestness and power of appreciation which ever mark his reading of Liszt's works. It is necessary to speak of the long symphony which followed-a Symphony to Dante's "Divina Commedia”with some reserve; for it is not always possible to grasp at a first or second hearing the poetic under-current of what seems on the surface too realistic. The symphony is divided into two parts: I. Inferno, II. Purgatorio leading to Paradiso, represented by a choir of female voices singing the opening verse of the Magnificat to an elaborate arrangement of the first Gregorian tone. Liszt undoubtedly tries to keep before his hearers the spiritual pains of hell, which everyone of us is bound to believe in, by the introduction of such thoughts as "There is no greater sorrow than to be mindful of the happy time in misery," but does he never allow his tendency to be realistic to get the better of his judgment? Does he never forget for an instant that we cannot depict a scene of torture or bliss beyond our own limited sphere? Knowing, as he must, that our idea of eternal punishment is almost synonymous with eternal remorse, or at most eternal inability to do right, does he never approach the grotesqueness of the unrefined realistic picture of the Japanese ideal o the place of torment now to be seen at Knightsbridge?

The following Scène Dramatique, "Jeanne d'Arc au bûcher," was a rest after the hard listening that the
