But whilst this assumed messiah was on earth, in Palestine or Egypt, he could not be in the balance of this world, much less in all the universe.

If in other parts, he must have operated as messiah, but this is not his history, as he is expressly located, and that location defines him too clearly as mortal, for rational mortals to mistake him at all.

Priestocracy corrupt at that, may affect to do so. He did not operate over the world as its messiah, that is clear.

How could this local Christ act on the balance of the world conformably to his mission then?

If he came for that purpose, and did not do it, then it proves him a deserter of his own cause, or incapable-a woful position for a messiah.

His whole messiahship is thus annihilated as a false pretence and nonentity before a perfect God.

How could Christ recognise the transgressions of those born anterior to him?

How fill the interval of the days, that were concerned from the time of conception to birth, to maturity of mind, and the days that it is assumed he lay in the sepulchre ? This is an impassable barrier for peculiar faith. But peculiar faith leaps many a barrier, that reason revolts at.

Peculiar faith is a rebel to mind, that owes a primary good faith to reason and God. The Christ-killers are dreadfully censured by some, yet how could the atonement by Christ's blood be otherwise effected? The fault lay in the dramatists.

As to the co-workers in this bloody fiction drama, what senseless contradiction and stupid effrontery to arraign them? Somebody had to do it!

They should be considered co-workers, and have their position accordingly.

But were they murderers or executioners of the mighty behest?

If they were murderers, then is Christ's death naught but a murder of a mortal.

If they were the enactors of a necessary drama, who can arraign them? Can predestination, herself most guilty?

If Christ suffered for blasphemy, who can libel God, whose principles vindicate him and his universe?

But why not have Christ, the Messiah?

Because God is a perfect being, and has perfect attributes; therefore it is a perfect blasphemy to do so. If God were not a perfect being, then messiahs might be tolerated; but that is the perjury.

Prove to the world the reverse position, or yield it in silence, and forever, that Christs are perfect humbugs.

Your peculiar claims for peculiar faith, come under this same category, by the soundest logic.

It is not Christ, nor christianity, nor peculiar faith and doctrines, that enlighten the world, but they darken it, indeed. That it is all a forgery, in pure language, to say that trinity can exist in unity, and be one or the other, as sophisticated dupes may pretend.

God never made such language, for it is not truth; consequently he is not the author of such absurd doctrine. The pure in mind will believe in an ever-living God, in all his perfect purity, uncontaminated with such foul untruths or moral blemishes.

Analysis tells us, too plainly for mistake, of the meagre poverty and failure of all pretended redemptions, none of which ever reached a majority of the world, at any period of authentic history known to the wise.

All such peculiar systems are criminal, as they hinder the progress of rational religion.

But Christ died for all! Why do not all say so?

Where are the eight hundred millions of the billion, every age or two, that are not benefited? and worse, this matter may end to the very ignorance of his name, in a few more ages in the world, except as a curious history of superstition.

It is utterly absurd to suppose a mediator-general, yet so peculiar that he cannot have an efficient mission.

He did this, confining himself to Jewry, a little country, and only a part of his own short age!

A brave and efficient messiah ought to have said: Follow me to the whole circumference of the globe-land.

Command me, world-citizens, as to your choice of miracles, that prove a God most satisfactorily.

Ye are the beneficiaries, and ye shall behold and direct all necessary to exhibit the Godship.

The mission is to convince and convert the whole world, and then it is done and finished.

And as you may have all doubts removed, death shall seem to invade this God; but the triumph shall be proved before the whole world.

Nature shall suffer, and the God-marks shall be left for a proof, all time of these conclusive miracles. History shall subscribe to the facts.

The character shall be fixed in nature, and she shall carry in her bosom all the arguments.

Mind shall not wait to be preached to, but shall reason on the mighty seal, fixed with God's works, and imbibe the trinity, not unity, of the Godhead.

But the very blood that, if he were mortal, he could not help shedding, and if God, could not have shed to death, is most absurdly to save the world, in one of its obscure points!

None, but the potent arm of Deity, can truly do this. And that proves the God, without the blood.

The presence of blood proves the mortal; the absence declares omnipotence. What an absurd drama!

[ocr errors]

All else belongs to the polytheism of an exploded mythology! The best proof of his mortality is, that he could not save himself; how, then, save the unvisited world, when he did not save the part particularly visited?

If the effusion of blood was expedient, there were the guilt and crime of murder in its execution, as the penalty of a Judas, the advocates of christianity affirm, prove. Can any analyst admit that the purity of the God of the universe, the God of mind, could plan, in his infinite power and perfection, a murder, that is necessary to secure the character of this Messiah?

No one in his senses can submit to such contradiction of language, that portrays a murder and not a murderer, a trinity that is unity. When can sophistry beat all this? This is the deepest of sophistry, conclusively. Sophistry can go no farther. Would that it were murder of language and sense alone.

Fanaticism and bigotry assume the province, and despotism of faith rears her obnoxious standard.

No matter for consistency, the virtue jewel of mind, the appropriate exercise and legitimate sphere is faith, however mere credulity, from which there is no appeal.

How can we trust to the false Peter, to testify about higher matters, in which his ignorance betrays him, or about matters of truth, when his testimony was invalidated by prior perjury? He cannot be at all, a worthy witness.

God asks not, nor permits, such witnesses and outrages on reason.

His signet is science, that impostors cannot lose, and his sceptre, philosophy, that blasphemy cannot mar. But how could the world dispense with the christian dispensation? How do without it? The universe cannot receive it, and that closes the barrier upon the whole world forever to its graceless pretences.

The majority of the world has ever done without it entirely all the time!

What part did the minority have? Not only that part, but all the balance of the whole world were upheld by God, thousands of years before any such pretended dispensation was ever cunningly devised, despite of all this, and all stumbling-blocks of all men's systems of plurality of gods, to have officiating priesthoods to expound their peculiar mysteries and faiths to the people.

But the Son of God must draw the soul!

What did those billions of souls, prior to the birth of Christ, eighteen centuries ago, do for that drawing?

As Christ had not died prior to his assumed crucifixion, which was considered absolutely essential for the satisfactory atonement, how could those anterior to his suffering, receive the benefit?

If the crucifixion had not been executed, as his advocates maintain, then none could be benefited.

The doctrine destroys itself plainly, and is sophistry, all.

Either, then, God is not God, or Christ is not the Messiah.

The works of the universe prove the first, and expel the last.

And is there any necessity, but in the monomania of fanatics, that sophisms and libels should be thus perpetrated on the Almighty, that he cannot be known by his works? What base and blasphemous libelers!

We prefer the ever-living God, the true and only proprietor.

We do not need two powers, no more than two suns for our solar system, as they might confuse. What could a trinity of suns do? No doubt there would be a trinity of suns to solar systems, if there were a trinity of the Godhead. Where, botches, could ye put another? Answer that before ye advance a step farther.

God is enough, if God be the God of the universe.

What could existence be, but for God?

The controlling authority is the creative authority, of course.

The resurrection of the immortal part was not connected to the advent of any peculiar dispensation; a perfect absurdity, as the doctrine necessarily cuts off preceding souls, but only proves by the impotent pretence, God's universal power that acted thus omnipotently from the creation. There is doubt as to Christ being the lamb, slain from the foundation, for the remission of sins by his blood, that this blood that is not capable of saving a majority of the people after the advent, should save all before it.

There is then the greatest absurdity, since he has never been able, as far as good proof that is most essential goes, to convince a majority, at any time since, much less save the whole before his advent.

This proves an absurdity, and impossibility.

Parents can do more good by teaching their children correct principles, than any lessons about all messiahs and christs. Time will come when Christ will mean a deceiver. Why?

The Creator, man's only God, has endowed the universe, mind included, with all necessary principles, and all the christs, apostles, saints, martyrs, pretenders, past, present and future, on earth, can only teach the same, but not as well, for the same reason that medical doctors cannot act for patients when first attacked, because their absence forbids the same at the right time.

After all the pretences of the whole systems about faith, the best can do more than teach correct principles, that God gave for all rational minds to use. If mind cannot find itself having all the functions of capacity, then the province of reason is silenced indeed.

All the christs possible add nothing to principles, but invalidate their good effect, as has been proved, that two suns, much less three, would bewilder and confuse our solar system.

Mind needs the ministers of science-education, embracing all funds necessary to be known, not corrupt impostors. But Christ, who died for his own actions in his mortal functions, died for all!

How do you prove that Christ died for all, by any truthful and unexceptionable testimony?

You are estopped on all but feeling, which is mere animal excitement in polytheism, and all that cannot be by any means any test for religion.

If test for anything, it is for peculiar faith, that is worth nothing in rational religion. "As in Adam all died, so in Christ all will be saved," is a doctrine that now falls also, and with it all its errors of universalism, that must be graduated to mind, merits, and all through the Creator of the universe.

The doctrine of accountability reigns triumphant, on triumphant principles of individuality and free moral agency.

Christ cannot be an infinite being at all, as his existence was local, not filling immensity of space; therefore he cannot possess infinite power, that is essentially necessary to save all, and positively cannot be a God.

Christ was identified with time and locality, and was their subject, whereas the God of the universe embraces time in eternity, and locality in boundless space, and is their

master.

The infinite eternal must have created all others christs and christ-makers, and masters; that is, God gave existence to all created beings. He is the only self-created. All others have only mortal powers.

Did Christ partake of the nature of the Father, that is God?

Christ partook of the nature of his father, that is mortal, and proved it by his birth, life and death. Born of a woman and of earth, he was no more than other mortals. Can any preacher partake of God's nature?

At most Christ, if ever such lived, only not as fiction, was only the author of a system of peculiar faith, he or his friends; it is impossible for it to be otherwise.

Did Christ originate anything characteristic of a God? Did he create a living being? Any body with perpetual motion, as God's creation shows? If he did not, then the mind, the beneficiary, is not to be hoaxed.

The

No peculiar hoax will answer now in this all important subject. As represented in the peculiar bible, who was Christ but a mind-juggler; well educated in Egyptian mysteries of that country's priestocracy? What better subjects did the whole world present at that time, for all kinds of imposition to be practiced upon them? moderns cannot properly appreciate the extreme ignorance and credulity of the ancient people in mass. People in those days of extreme ignorance, were very credulous of phenomena that they could not explain, and looked upon as miracles. How could

they do otherwise, when masters were bewildered in the mazes of metaphysics. Of course, miracles then were very common with such a kind of people. The cunning part, the priestocracy, made speculation of all this capital of superstition. How many such characters have arisen since, with success correspondent to the ignorance or improved state of the world?

Mahomet, six hundred years and more afterwards, triumphed in this very system, adding thereto his own works and miracles.

Prophecies need not be very interesting after the prophet Christ is annihilated. It would be well for the world to know when some were written? Were not all after the events? Of course, and long after the pretended life time! No special pleading will touch the question about that of the temple. Time, that prophecies, will best answer all such without error, and will destroy many other temples of peculiar faith, that is plain.

To whom but the author of time do honor and glory belong in the highest, as the Creator of the universe, and all intelligence, or mind, the greatest of all?

It is for intelligent mankind to discard all such impositions at once. Mind has most ardently sought in its purest sincerity to estimate Christ as the greatest reformer, but it discovers that all messiahs are impostors and swindlers: and if peculiar faith was not represented by absolutism, identified with relations and friendships personal, besides the spirit of the corps, it would hardly be countenanced by men of science any less than the false pretences of impostors.

Did Christ propagate science or philosophy, to exalt the character of mind as Socrates, or scatter the seed of sectarianism and elements of dissension, by referring to himself as master, when the Creator alone was the chief of his own universe exclusively? The question arises, not to be resisted, how do you obtain conviction of sin, but through mind?

Mind must be enlightened to perceive, and independent to act. Did Christ advance society through God's principles in science and philosophy?

What is the character of him who appropriates from the public treasury of God, abundant funds without due acknowledgment, and misapplies them?

If miracles were expedient for proof, why not leave the world, the universe, duly Christ impressed?

But they are God, not Christ, impressed.

How many mountains or continents are Christ's?

Not one.

How many souls, minds, are Christ's? Not one. They are God's. Instead of presenting us the facts of rational religion, Christ's system adopts polytheism, no less than four gods or powers, adds to it sex and numbers of assistants! Saints even at this day-all paganism of the worst species.

Christ was a man, and might have been a great reformer of his day, if he had acted as mortal, but attempting more, he was an impostor.

The acts of Christ, lead to blind and savage fanatical infatuation.

What were the crusades, but magnificent robberies and murders for conquests, under the impulse of abject superstition? The bible added to the delusion, and nurtured the opinion"that the thousand years mentioned in revelation, c. xx. were fulfilled; that Christ was soon to make his appearance in Palestine to judge the world."

"The pilgrims meet with a rough reception in Palestine from the Turks, who derided the sacred mysteries of Christianity. Pope Gregory VII. had formed a design of uniting all the princes of Christendom against the Mahometans; but his exorbitant encroachments upon the civil power of princes had created him so many enemies, &c." Pope Martin II., with Peter the hermit, excited four thousand ecclesiastics and thirty thousand seculars, besides the greatest prelates, nobles and princes, to rescue the holy city from the hands of the infidels by war."

[ocr errors]

"It is deemed the will of God," was deemed a divine impulse to influence Europe, now "sunk in the most profound ignorance and superstition.

The ecclesiastics had gained the greatest ascendant over the human mind; and the people who committed the most horrid crimes and disorders, knew of no other expiation than the observances imposed on them by their spiritual pastors."

Next to this, feudal law prevailed.

"All the great lords possessed the right of peace and war, and valor was the only excellence."

The first army of three hundred thousand men, was a multitude "that found themselves obliged to attain by plunder what they vainly expected from miracles, and were slaughtered without resistance."

The crusaders of the confederated army, amounting to seven hundred thousand men, were successful in taking the holy city as it was so miscalled.

Other crusades had its defeats as well as victories.

"M. Voltaire, as quoted by Buck, computes the people who perished in the different expeditions at upwards of two millions." Some good, of course, grew out of all these evils, and by the time, as the rage continued for near two centuries."

"But the worst enemies the croisaders had, were their own internal feuds and dissensions." Their three states at Jerusalem, Antioch and Edessa, made war on each other, and other Greek emperors, and thus became an easy prey to the common enemy. They committed horrid cruelties, as barbarians inflamed with the most bigoted enthusiasm."

[ocr errors]

"When Jerusalem was taken, the inhabitants were massacred; no age or sex was spared, not even sucking children."

The monks and schoolmasters superstitiously encouraged the croisades of children, who were betrayed by their base conductors.

And yet all this was not enough to satisfy the fanaticism of "several popes, who have attempted since that period to stir up the Christians to such an undertaking."

Once we might have been perfectly enchanted with the chivalry of the croisades, now we are disgusted at their fanaticism, superstition and bigotry, that caused abominable cruelty, without a redeeming trait.

What were the inquisitions, but the most brutal and savage tyranny, that the most superstitious fanatics ever got up?

After such displays, and utter incapacity of peculiar faith to hold up her head, messiahships can well be pronounced of no account as unavailable.

Had Christ or any other messiahship affector established the right principles, they, not men or disciples, would have vindicated themselves and him before the universe and its God, and would have established the incontrovertible faith of rational religion.

We go to the best and highest authority to prove that as the bible of tradition, so all peculiar faiths are impeached and utterly discarded. Then we see the utter absurdity of expecting anything from messiahship.

The commission of the Savior, as he is called, was to the apostles to preach to the whole world, whilst he who assumed to have the power of a world's conversion should have executed it in his lifetime, and perfected his mission. Who could have executed his promise to redeem the world better than Christ, if practicable.

But infants, deaf persons, &c., who for ages were not more than infants before science taught them, could not be preached to?

They cannot be taught faith-that is unavailable with them.

Their innocence is the pleader in the court of conscience before God, who was their creator, and they must be his beneficiaries. Any church rite is a mummery, where belief is not attainable at its institution.

Children cannot be damned because they do not believe the scriptures, supposing them at all efficacious. Shall the infant that is excluded from the church, be excluded from the bible heaven?

If there was an efficacious covenant by the Jewish polity, that, if a basis for universal salvation, should have been primarily so. But who does not know that it was absolutely confined to Palestine or its emigrants exclusively? and that it caused an absurd prostitution of rite on nature's laws, that is, circumcision.

Had the Jews established a universal empire by the sword, then that faith might have flourished as other peculiar faiths, that were peculiarly indebted immediately or otherwise to the sword or imperial influence, for propagation and institution, as imperial policy dictated.

As the first covenant of Judaism was too peculiar to be the world's benefit, the last predicated on that false position is entirely nugatory.

Whether these covenants be continued or annulled, they are both too peculiar as man's work, for God's blessings. Both have been the severest curses to the peculiar people adopting them. Any faith that refers to them, is as corrupt as the base.

Where was the Creator's covenant with mind, from its creation? A birthright stamped by the immutable laws of nature as this, could not be annulled.

All man's Christs might affect to offer their covenants of grace and salvation, but the seed could not fall on any but a barren soil. All that was of the universe was the exclusive property of Deity, and of course was pre-occupied.

Among the many proofs of gospel false pretences, are the great differences between the old and new testament dispensations.

The old dispensation is superseded by the new dispensation, on the annunciation of the messiah.

Now, God is perfect at creation, but man is imperfect in his conception of it, and advances in the progress of mind's science his various systems of peculiar faith.
