offerings.

1239.

I think it should be

Μακελλη in the Nominative Cafe, δίκη in the Dative, or Ablative. The Tranflator understood it thus.

1271.

Σοφώτατε twice over, is not to be endured. Read,

Hemfterhufius renders it, fed Laferpitium rado. I believe it fhould be rade. Schol.

THESMO ♣. 230.

Kufier.

Either I am miftaken, or they are mistaken both of them. The conftruction is, va μn waρéxw σε Left I fhould have the crows feaft upon me, and laugh over my carcafe."

The laughter of the Crows, which perhaps offended Kufter, is proper enough, and in the comic style.

LYSISTR

See Virg. Georg. I. 9. and Servius.

Poculaque inventis Acheloïa mifcuit Uvis.

776.

Perhaps "A. "I know that you pass your nights difagreeably, but have patience, &c.

HESIO D.

Θ Ε Ο Γ. 29.

Sic dixerunt filie Jovis magni veridica,

Et mihi fceptrum dederunt, Lauri perviridis ramum, Decerpere mirandum.

Έδωσαν δρεψαθαι, dederunt decerpere. But I think it would be much better Agrbaras decerpentes ramum mihi dederunt:-" decerptum ramum dederunt."

There is an old epigram in the Anthologia, cited and commended by Le Clerc in his notes on Hefiod, which favours, and feems to confirm my conjecture.

Ipfa pafcentem meridie oves Mufæ

Viderunt te in afperis montibus, Hefiode :

Et tibi pulchra folia habentem decerpentes omnes
Porrexerunt Lauri facrum ramum.

Ib. 194.

Pulcherrimi verfus. Sic Homerus: Il. I. 347.

Servius, ad Virg. Georg. IV. 403.

"Fere omnes

Dii marini fenes funt; albent enim eorum Capita fpumis aquarum.”

Euftathius, ad Homer. II. A. 250. P. 116. Ed. Rom.

Γραύς eft et anus et fpuma: ludit idcirco in hac voce Ariftophanes, Plut. 1205.

Ib. 272.

• Haud paullo elegantius legas ερπόμενοι, repentes, cum a rarius fignificet incedere." CLERICUS.

But the verfe is certainly right.

Homer, Il. E. 441.

Ib. 868.

Jupiter conquered Typhoëus, and flung him into Tartarus.
