NOTE.

Alexander the Great, 332

It will perhaps be easier to understand the double reckoning of the 70 years' captivity by the following diagram showing how it is reckoned as beginning at different points, and closing at equi-different points.

THE BASIS FOR TEACHING ALL GRADES.

This book is for the teachers of all grades in the Sunday school, from the student's adult classes to the smallest primary. Its purpose is to furnish the knowledge and the practical applications which must underlie all good teaching, even of the youngest classes. It is the basis of correct interpretation, of knowledge of the facts, of statement of principles, of legitimate inferences, on which the teacher may securely stand, and adapt his instruction to the particular grade he is teaching. For practically all schemes of Sunday school lessons, for old or young, at some time in their course take up in general the same passages of Scripture as the International Lessons for which during each six years' course are selected the most interesting and helpful parts of Scripture for the young.

So that teachers of other courses can, and I know some who do, keep on hand the Select Notes for the six-year course through the Bible, and it is not easy for any class or teacher to find better helps than the Select Notes on the portions studied, not only because of what they teach on different points, but also on account of the references to literature and to works upon the Bible, here given more fully than in any other book.

THE SCRIPTURE TEXT.

The Scripture text will this year be printed in large type, as usual, so that the basis of the lessons may be easily caught by the eye, in the Authorized Version, while the changes made by the American Revision, so far as they seriously affect the meaning to ordinary readers, are noted in the comments on the lessons.

The Authorized Version is the best basis for this purpose, for many reasons. Almost every one has the authorized version and uses it in the Sunday school. So that to give the Revision alone, would make Responsive Readings almost impossible. Hence those journals which use the American Revision, place the Authorized by its side. But this takes up too much room in a book. Moreover, Peloubet's Select Notes are used in every great country in the world, in most of which the Am. R. is not used, at least largely, in the Sunday schools.

LIBRARY AND LITERARY REFERENCES

A

are given with each lesson. So far as Biblical literature is concerned they will be chiefly to the latest books or the best books of any age. But for sidelights, literary illustrations, and poetic references, any book published will be referred to. For, even if out of print, it will be in various libraries, public or private, and the reference cannot harm those who do not have it and cannot find it in the book stores. Moreover, books that are familiar in one part of the country are rare in another part. friend warns me against naming some books he cannot find in his region, but which are familiar here, and wants reference to books which are not common in these parts. These library references aid the teacher in research, guide him to new fields, refresh his memory of things that he has long known, and bring to his notice historical and literary parallels.

DEPARTMENT FOR UTILIZING SURPLUS MATERIAL.

In nearly every home, church and Sunday school in North America there is a quantity of surplus material which would become of great value if properly used. This new department is a blessing to Sunday schools, both in our own land and in mission fields. It is blessed to those who give and those who receive. It meets a special need in the home schools because it gives them another opportunity to put into practice the truths they learn.

This Department can place you in touch with a missionary of your own denomination or with an interdenominational worker who needs these supplies. In five years,

more than 16,000 introductions have been placed, and thousands of valuable packages are going to the missionaries every year.

Pictures are of great value. Many native preachers base their preaching largely upon the scenes in the lesson picture rolls. Scrap books are in great demand. So are quarterlies, papers, books, special exercises for Christmas and Easter.

Do NOT send your supplies to the New York office, but forward them to the missionary on the foreign field, whose address will be sent you with the introduction.

Address Rev. Samuel D. Price, 216 Metropolitan Tower, New York City. Enclose a stamp for the reply, and please indicate your denomination in full.
