GEN. II. Hast thou eaten of the tree whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? 12 And the man said, (—) The wòman, whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, *Sub-tile, not suttle, as it is often vulgarly pronounced. and I did eat. 13 And the Lord God said unto the woman, What is this that thou hast done? IV.-8 And Cain talked with Abel his brother it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him. 9 And the Lord said unto Cain, (。) Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's kéeper? 10 And he said, (。) What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground. 11 And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. 12 When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a vagabond shalt thou be in the earth. 13 And Cain said unto the Lord, (-) My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond in the earth: and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slày me. 15 And the Lord said unto him, Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him seven fold. And the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. THE PREDICTION OF THE FLOOD. GEN. VI.-13 And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them: and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth. 14 Make thee an àrk of gòpher-wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. 15 And this is the fashion which thou shalt make it of: the length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fìfty cubits, and the height of it thìrty cubits. 16 A window shalt thou make to the ark, and in a cubit shalt thou finish it above; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof: with lower, sécond, and third stories shalt thou make it. 17 And, behold I, even I, do bring a flood of wàters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven: and every thing that is in the earth shall die. 18 But with thee will I establish my còvenant and thou shalt come into the ark: thóu, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sóns' wives with thee. 19 And of every living thing of all flèsh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female. 22 Thus did Noah according to all that God commanded him, so did he. LANGUAGE CONFOUNDED. GEN. XI.-1 And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech. 2 And it came to pass, as they journeyed from the east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar; and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another, Go to, let us make brick, and bùrn them thoroughly. And they made brick for stone, and slime had they for mortar. 4 And they said, Go tò, let us build us a cìty and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered abroad upon the face of the whole earth. 5. And the Lord came down to see the city, and the tower, which the children of men builded. 6 And the Lord said, (o) Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. 7 Go tò, let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand one another's speech. 8 So the Lord scattered them abroad from thence upon the face of all the earth: and they left off to build the city. : CONTENTION OF ABRAHAM AND LOT. GEN. XIII.-1 And Abram went out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south. 2 And Abram was very rich in cattle, in sílver and in gòld. 3 And he went on his journeys from the south, even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hà-i; 4 Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the fìrst and there Abram called on the name of the Lòrd. 5 And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and hérds, and tents. 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together. 7 And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lòt's cattle. And the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. 8 And Abram said unto Lot, (-) Let there be no strife between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen: for we be brethren. 9 Is not the whole land before thee? Sèparate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left. 15 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto |
