Then as a bee, which among weeds doth | There is she crowned with garlands of fall,

content;

There doth she manna eat, and nectar drink:

That presence doth such high delights present,

As never tongue could speak, nor heart could think.

Which seem sweet flowers with lustre fresh and gay,

She lights on that and this, and tasteth all;

But pleased with none, doth rise and soar away.

A noble heart doth teach a virtuous | He looks upon the mightiest monarch's

wars

But only as on stately robberies;
Where evermore the fortune that prevails
Must be the right: the ill-succeedingmars
The fairest and the best faced enterprise.
Great pirate Pompey lesser pirates quails:
Justice, he sees (as if seducéd), still
Conspires with power, whose cause must
not be ill.

scorn

To scorn to owe a duty overlong;
To scorn to be for benefits forborne;
To scorn to lie; to scorn to do a wrong;
To scorn to bear an injury in mind;
To scorn a free-born heart slave-like to
bind.

But if for wrongs we needs revenge must have,

Then be our vengeance of the noblest

kind.

Do we his body from our fury save,
And let our hate prevail against his
mind?

What can 'gainst him a greater vengeance be,

Than make his foe more worthy far than

he?

SAMUEL DANIEL.

[1562-1619.]

FROM AN EPISTLE TO THE COUNT-
ESS OF CUMBERLAND.

HE that of such a height hath built his mind,

And reared the dwelling of his thoughts so strong,

As neither fear nor hope can shake the

frame

Of his resolvéd powers; nor all the wind
Of vanity or malice pierce to wrong
His settled peace, or to disturb the same:
What a fair seat hath he, from whence he

may

The boundless wastes and wilds of man survey?

And with how free an eye doth he look down

Upon these lower regions of turmoil? Where all the storms of passions mainly beat

On flesh and blood: where honor, power,

renown,

Are only gay afflictions, golden toil;
Where greatness stands upon as feeble
feet,
As frailty doth; and only great doth seem
To little minds, who do it so esteem.

And hasty climbers soonest fall;
I see that such as sit aloft

Mishap doth threaten most of all. These get with toil, and keep with fear; Such cares my mind could never bear.

No princely pomp nor wealthy store,
No force to win the victory,
No wily wit to salve a sore,

No shape to win a lover's eye,
To none of these I yield as thrall;
For why, my mind despiseth all.

Some have too much, yet still they crave;
I little have, yet seek no more.
They are but poor, though much they
have;

And I am rich with little store.
They poor, I rich; they beg, I give;
They lack, I lend; they pine, I live.

I laugh not at another's loss,

I grudge not at another's gain;
No worldly wave my mind can toss;

I brook that is another's bane.
I fear no foe, nor fawn on friend;
I loathe not life, nor dread mine end.

THE FAIRY TO PUCK.

OVER hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire,
I do wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moon's sphere.
And I serve the Fairy Queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green;
The cowslips tall her pensioners be,
In their gold coats spots you see,
Those be rubies, fairy favors;
In those freckles live their savors.
I must go seek some dew-drops here,
And hang a pearl in every cowslip's ear.

AMIENS'S SONG.

BLOW, blow, thou winter wind, Thou art not so unkind

As man's ingratitude; Thy tooth is not so keen, Because thou art not seen, Although thy breath be rude. Freeze, freeze, thou bitter sky, That dost not bite so nigh As benefits forgot:
