Llijab convinceth Baal's prophets, Chap. xix.

and faid. how long halt ye between two faid, Do it the third time. And they did opinions? If the LORD be God, follow it the third time. Him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people anfwered him not a word.

22 Then faid Elijah unto the people. 1. even I only remain à prophet of the LoxD; but Baal's prophets are four Aundred and fifty men.

28 Let them therefore give us two bullocks; and let them choose one bullock for themselves, and cut it in pieces, and hy it on wood, and put no fire under: and I will drefs the other bullock, and lay it on wood, and put no fire under:

35 And the water ran round about the altar and he filled the trench also with water

36 And it came to pafs at the time of the offering of the evening facrifice, that Elijah_the_prophet came near, and said, LORD God of Abraham, Ifaac, and af Ifrael, let it be known this day that thou art God in Ifrael, and that I am thy fervant, and that I have done all these things at thy word.

37 Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou haft turned their heart back again.

24 And call ye on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the LORD and the God that anfwereth by fire, let him be God. And all the people 88 Then the fire of the LORD fell, and anfwered and faid, It is well spoken. confumed the burnt facrifice, and the wood, and the ftones, and the duft, and licked up the water that was in the trench.

25 And Elijah faid unto the prophets of Baal, Choofe ye one bullock for yourfelves, and drefs r first; for ye are many; and call on the name of your gods, hut put no fire under.

26 And they took the bullock which was given them, and they dreffed it, and called on the name of Baal from morning even until noon, faying, O Baal, hear us. But there was no voice, nor any that anfwered. And they leaped upon the altar which was made.

59 And when all the people faw it they fell on their faces and they faid, The LORD, he is the God; the LORD he is the God.

40 And Elijah faid unto them, Take the prophets of Baal; let not one of them efcape. And they took them: and Elijah brought them down to the brook Kishon, and flew them there.

41 And Elijah faid unto Ahab, Get thee up, eat and drink; for there is a found of abundance of rain."

27 And it came to pafs at noon, that Elijah mocked them, and faid, Cry aloud for he is a god; either he is talking, or he is purfuing, or he is in a journey, or per- 42 So Alab went up to eat and to adventure he fleepeth, and must be a-drink. And Elijah went up to the top of waked. Carmel; and he caft himself down upon the earth, and put his face between his knees.

28 And they cried aloud, and cut them felves after their manner with knives and lancets, till the blood gushed out upon them.

29 And it came to pafs, when midday was past, and they prophefied until the time of the offering of the evening facri fice, that there was neither voice nor any to anfwer, nor any that regarded.

30 And Elijah faid unto all the people, Come near unto me. And all the people came near unto him. And he repaired the altar of the LORD that was broken down. 31 And Elijah took twelve tones, according to the number of the tribes of the fons of Jacob, unto whom the word of the LORD came, faying, Ifrael fhall be thy name:

32 And with the ftones he built an al tar in the name of the LORD: and he nade a trench about the altar, as great as would contain two measures of feed.

33 And he put the wood in order, and eut the bullock in pieces, and laid him on the wood, and faid. Fill four barrels with water, and pour it on the burnt facrifice and on the wood.

34 And he faid, Do it the fecond time. And they did in the fecond time. And he

43 And faid to his fervant, Goup now, look toward the fea. And he went up, and looked, and faid, There is nothing. And he faid, Go again feven times.

44 And it came to pafs at the feventh time, that he faid, Behold, there arifeth a little cloud out of the fea, like a man's hand. And he said, Go up, lay unto Ahab, Prepare by chariot, and get thee down, that the rain ftop thee not.

45 And it came to pafs in the mean while, that the heaven was black with clouds and wind, and there was a great rain. And Ahab rode,and went to Jezreel.

46 And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah: and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel. CHAP. XIX.

AND Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and withal how he had flain all the prophets with the 1word.

2 Then Jezebel fent a meffenger unto Elijah, faying, So let the gods do to me,

1. KINGS. Benhadad befiegesh Samaria: Damafcus: and when thou comeft, anoint Hazael to be king over Syria.

and more alfo, if I make not thy life as the life of one of them by tomorrow a bout this time.

3 And when he faw tba, he arofe, and went for his life, and came to Beersheba, which belongeth to Judah, and left his fervant there.

4 But he himself went a day's jour ney into the wilderness, and came and fat down under a juniper tree: and he requefted for himself that he might die; and faid, It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life; for I am not better than my fathers.

5 And as he lay and flept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and faid unto him, Arife and eat.

6 And he looked, and, behold, there was a cake baken on the coals, and a cruife of water at his head. And he did eat and drink, and laid him down again. 7 And the angel of the LORD came again the fecond time, and touched him, and faid, Arife and eat; because the journey is too great for thee.

16 And Jehu the fon of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Ifrael and Elisha the fon of Shaphat of Abelmeholah halt thou anoint to be prophet in thy

room.

17 And it fhall come to pafs, that him that efcapeth the fword of Hazael fhall Jehu flay and him that escapeth from the fword of Jehu thall Elifha flay.

18 Yet I have left me feven thoufand in Ifrael, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which [hath not kissed him.

19¶So he departed thence, and found Elifha the fon of Shaphat, who was ploughing with twelve yoke of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth and Elijah paffed by him, and caft his mantle upon him.

20 And he left the oxen, and ran after Elijah, and said, Let me, I pray thee, kifs my father and my mother, and then I will follow thee. And he faid unto him, Go back again: for, What have I done to

8 And he arofe, and did eat and drink, and went in the ftrength of that meat for-thee? ty days and forty nights unto Horeb the mount of God.

9¶And he came thither unto a cave, and lodged there: and, behold. the word of the LORD came to him, and he faid unto him, What doest thou here, Elijah?

10 And he faid, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hofts: for the children of Ifrael have forfaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars,and slain thy prophets with the fword: and 1, even I only am left; and they feek my life, to take it away.

21 And he returned back from him, and took a yoke of oxen, and flew them, and boiled their flesh with the inftruments of the oxen, and gave unto the people, and they did eat. Then he arofe, and went after Elijah, and miniftered unto him,

14 And he faid, I have been very jealous for the LORD God of hofts: because the children of lfrael have torfaken thy covenant, thrown down thine altars, and flain thy prophets with the fword: and I, even I only, am left; and they feek my life, to take it away.

15 And the LORD faid unto him, Go. return on thy way to the wilderness of

S Thy.filver and thy gold is mine: thy wives alfo and thy children, even the goodlieft, are mine.

And the king of Ifrael answered and faid, My lord, O king, according to thy faying, I am thine, and all that have.

5 And the meffengers came again, and faid, Thus speaketh Benhadad, faying, Although I have fent unto thee, faying, Thou shalt deliver me thy filver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;

6 Yet I will fend my fervants unto thee tomorrow about this time. and they fhall fearch thine house, and the houses of thy fervants; and it fhall be, that whatfoever is pleafant in thine eyes, they shall put it in their hand, and take it away.

7 Thenthe king of Ifrael called all the elders of the land; and faid, Mark, I pray you, and fee how this man feeketh mil

chief: for he fent unto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my filver, and for my gold; and I denied him not. 8 And all the elders and all the people faid unto him, Hearken not unto bim, nor confent.

9 Wherefore he faid unto the meffengers of Benhadad, Tell my lord the king, All that thou didst fend for to thy fervant at the firft, I will do: but this thing I may not do. And the meffengers departed, and brought him word again.

10 And Benhadad fent unto him, and faid, The gods do fo unto me, and more alfo, if the duft of Samaria fhall fuffice for handfuls for all the people that follow

me.

11 And the king of Ifrael anfwered and faid, Teli bim, Let not him that girdeth on bis barnefs boaft himself as he that putteth it off.

22 And the prophet came to the king of Ifrael, and faid unto him, Go, ftrength en thy felf, and mark, and fee what thou doeft: for at the return of the year the king of Syria will come up against thee.

23 And the fervants of the king of Syria faid unto him, Their gods are gods of the hills; therefore they were stronger than we; but let us fight against them in the plain, and furely we shall be stronger than they.

24 And do this thing, Take the kings away, every man out of his place, and put captains in their rooms:

25 And number thee an army, like the army that thou haft loft, horfe for horfe, and chariot for chariot; and we will fight against them in the plain, and furely we fhall be ftronger than they. 28 And there came a man of God and fpake unto the king of Ifrael and faid, Thus faith the LORD, because the Syrians have faid, The LORD is God of 14 And Ahab faid, By whom? on our loins, and ropes upon our heads, and go out so the king of Ifrael: perad venture he will fave thy life.

32 So they girded fackcloth on their loins, and put ropes on their heads, and came to the king of Ifrael, and said, Thy fervant Benhadad faith, I pray thee, let me live. And he faid, Is he yet alive? He is my brother.

came forth to him; and he caufed him 3 And Naboth faid to Ahab, the LORD to come up into the chariot. forbid it me, that I should give the inheritance of my fathers unto thee.

$4 And Benhadad laid unto him, The cities which my father took from thy fa ther, I will reffore; and thou shalt make ftreets for thee in Damafcus, as my father made in Samaria. Then faid Ahab, will fend thee away with this covenant. So he made a covenant with him, and fent him away.

4 And Ahab came into his houfe heavy and difpleased, because of the word w huch Naboth the Jezreelite had spoken to him: for he had faid, I will not give thee the inheritance of my fathers. And he laid him down upon his bed, and turned away his face, and would eat no bread.

5 But Jezebel his wife came to him, and faid unto him, Why is thy (pirit fo. fad, that thou eateft no bread?

85 And a certain man of the fons of the prophets faid unto his neighbour in the word of the LORD, Smite me, I pray thee. And the man refused to fmite him. 6 And he faid unto her, Because I fpake 36 Then faid he unto him, Because unto Naboth the Jezreelite, and faid unte thou haft not obeyed the voice of the him, Give me thy vineyard for money; LORD, Behold, as foon as thou art de- or elfe, if it pleafe thee, I will give thee parted from me, a lion fhall flay thee.anoiber vineyard for it: and he answered, And as foon as he was departed from him, I will not give thee my vineyard. a lion found him, and flew him.

87 Then he found another man, and faid, Smite me I pray thee. And the man finote him, fo that in fmiting he wounded him.

38 So the prophet departed, and waited for the king by the way, and difguifed himfelf with afhes upon his face.

39 And as the king palled by, he cried unto the king: and he faid, Thy fervant went out into the midft of the battle; and, behold, a man turned afide, and brought a man unto me, and faid, Keep this man if by any means he be miffing, then thail thy life be for his life, or elfe thou shalt pay a talent of filver.

7 And Jezebel his wife faid unto him, Doft thou now govern the kingdom of ILrael? Arife, and eat bread, and let thine heart be merry: I will give thee the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite.

8 So the wrote letters in Ahab's name, and fealed them with his fea', and fent the letters unto the elders and to the nobles that were in his city, dwelling with Naboth.

9 And he wrote in the letters, faying, Proclaim a fast, and fet Naboth on high among the people?

10 And fet two men, fons of Belial, before him, to bear witnefs against him, faying, Thou didst blafpheme God and 40 And as thy fervant was bufy here the king. And then carry him out, and and there, he was gone And the king offtone him that he may die." Ifrael faid unto him. So ball thy judg ment be; thyfelf haft decided it.

41 And he hafted,and took theafhes away from his face; and the king of Ifrael dilcerned him that he was of the prophets. 42 And he faid unto him, Thus faith the LORD, Because thou haft let go out of zby hand a man whom I appointed to utter deftruction, therefore thy life fall go for his life, and thy people for his people. 43 And the king of Ifrael went to his house heavy and difpleafed, and came to Samaria.

CHAP. XXI. 1 Abab is denied Naborb's vineyard. Jezebel caufeth Naboth to be condemned. 17 Elijab denouncer judgment against Abab and Jezebel.

11 And the men of his city, even the elders and the nobles who were the inhab. itants in his city, did as Jezebel had fent unto them and as it was written in the letters which the had fent unto them.

12 They proclaimed a faft, and fet Naboth on high among the people.

18 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and fat before hith: and the men of Belial witneTed against him, even against Naboth, in the prefence of the people, faying, Naboth did blafpheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with ftones that he died.

14 Then they fent to Jezebel, faying, Naboth is ftoned, and is dead.

15 And it came to pafs, when Jezebel AND it came to pafs after these things, heard that Naboth was ftoned, and was bat Naboth the Jezreelite had a vine-dead, that Jezebel faid to Ahab Arife, yard, which was in Jezreel, hard by the palace of Ahab king of Samaria.

2 And Ahab fpake unto Naboth, fay. ing. Give me thy vineyard, that I may have it for a garden of herbs, becaufe, it is near unto mine houte: and I will give thee for it a better vineyard than it; or if it feem good to thee, 1 will give thee the worth of it in money.

take poffeffion of the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, which he refused to give thee for money; for Naboth is not alive, but dead.

16 And it came to pafs, when Ahab heard that Naboth was dead, that Ahab rofe up to go down to the vineyard of Naboth the Jezreelite, to take poffefion of it.

17 ¶ And

Chap. xxii. and is feduced by falfe prophets. 817 is our's, and we be still, and take it not out of the hand of the king of Syria?

17 ¶ And the word of the LORD came to Elijah the Tishbite, faying,

18 Arife, go down to meet Ahab king of Ifrael, which is in Samaria: behold, is in the vineyard of Naboth, whither he is gone down to poffefs it.

19 And thou shalt speak unto him, fay. ing, Thus faith the LORD, Haft thou kill. ed, and alfo taken poffeffion? And thou fhalt speak unto him, faying, Thus faith the LORD, in the place where dogs licked the blood of Naboth shall dogs lick thy blood, even thine.

20 And Ahab faid to Elijah, Haft thou found me, O mine enemy? And he anfwered, I have found thee: becaufe thou haft fold thy felf to work evil in the fight of the LORD

21 Behold, I will bring evil upon thee, and will take away thy pofterity, and will Gut off from Ahab him that piffeth against the wall, and him that is thut up and left in Ifrael,

4 And he laid unto Jehoshaphat, Wilt thou go with me to battle to Ramothgilead And Jehoshaphat faid to the king of Ifrael, I am as thou art, my people as thy people, my horfes as thy horfes.

5 And Jeho aphat faid unto the king of Ifrael, Inquire, I pray thee, at the word of the LORD today."

6 Ihen the king of lirael gathered the prophets 1ogether, about four hundred men,and taid unto them, Sall I go against Ramothgilead to battle of Shall I forbear? And they faid, Go up for the LORD thall deliver it into the hand of the king. 7 And Jehoshaphat said, Is there not here a prophet of the LORD besides, that we might inquire of him?

8 And the king of Ifrael faid unto Jehothaphat, There is yet one man, Micaiah the fon of Imlah, by whom we may in. quire of the LORD but I hate him; for he doth not prophecy good concerning me, but evil. And Jehoshaphat faid, Let not the king fay fo

22 And will make thine houfe like the houfe of Jeroboam the fon of Nebat, and like the houfe of Baatha the fon of Ahi. jah, for the provocation wherewith hou 9 Then the king of Ifrael called an ofhaft provoked me to anger, and made Ifficer, and faid, Haften biber Micaiah the rael to fin. fon of Imlah

23 And of Jezebel alfo fpake the LORD, faying, The dogs shall eat Jezebel by the wall of Jezreel.

24 Him that dieth of Ahab in the city the dogs fhall eat; and him that dieth in the field fhall the fowls of the air eat.

25 But there was none like unto Ahab, which did fell himself to work wickednefs in the light of the LORD, whom Jez ebel his wife ttirred up.

26 And he did very abominably in following idols, according to all things as did the Amorites, whom the LORD caft our before the children of Ifrael.

27 And it came to pafs, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put fackcloth upon his flesh, and faft. od, and lay in fackcloth, and went foftly. 28 And the word of the Lo&D came to Elijah the Tifhbite, faying.

29 Seeft thou how Ahab humbleth himfelf before me? Because he humbleth himfelt before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his fon's days will I bring the evil upon his houfe.

CHAP. XXII.

10 And the king of Ifrael and Jehofhaphat the king of Judah fat each on his throne, having put on their robes, in a void place in the entrance of the gate of Samaria; and all the prophets prophefied before them.

11 And Zedekiah the fon of Chenaanah made him horns of iron: and he faid, thus faith the LORD, With thefe halt thou push the Syrians, until thou have confumed them."

12 And all the prophets prophesied fo, faying,Go up to Ramothgilead, and prof. per: for the LORD fhall deliver it into the king's hand.

13 And the meffenger that was gone to call Micaiah (pake unto him, faying, Behold now, the words of the prophets declare good unto the king withone mouth: let thy word, I pray thee, be like the word of one of them,and speak that which is good.

14 And Micaiah faid, As the LORD liveth, what the LORD faith unto me, that will I fpeak.

15 So he came to the king. And the king faid unto him, Micaiah, Shall we go against Ramothgilead to battle?or, Shall we forbear? And he anfwered him, Go, and profper: for the LORD thall deliver into the hand of the king.

2 And it came to pafs in the third year, that Jehoshaphat the king of Judah came down to the king of Ifrael.

3 And the king of Ifrael faid unto his fervants, Know ye that Ramoth in Gilead

16 And the king said unto him, How many times hall adjure thee that thou tell me nothing but that which is true in the name of the LORD?

17 And he faid, I faw all Ifrael fcattered upon the hills, as theep that have not a fhepherd:
