It bears the stamp of his mature years, and is a model of pure, straightforward English. The object of the essay, as a requirement for admission. to the colleges of New England, is to present to the young student an example of what is most worthy of study and imitation in English style. The essay is to be studied as a piece of literature, and the notes are to be brought into service only as an aid to a complete understanding of the text. To those, however, who desire to gain a knowledge of English History, and I believe there is no better way to study the political history of the period covered by the essay, the notes will be found suggestive.
