The vanity of idols

Chap. xl. thee, O LORD; thou art great, and thy name is great in might.

7 Who would not fear thee, O King of nations for to thee doth it appertain: forafmuch as among all the wife men of the nations, and in all their kingdoms, there is none like unto thee.

8 But they are altogether brutish and fool

ith the flock is a doctrine of vanities.

9 Silver fpread into plates is brought from Tarfhish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the workman, and of the hands of the founder: blue and purple is their clothing: they are all the work of cunning men.

10 But the LORD is the true God, he is the living God, and an everlasting king: at his wrath the earth fhall tremble, and the nations thall not be able to abide his indignation.

11 Thus thall ye fay unto them, The gods that have not made the heavens and the earth, even they fhall perish from the earth, and from under thefe heavens.

12 He hath made the earth by his power, he hath eftablished the world by his wifdom, and bath ftretched out the heavens by his difcretion.

13 When he uttereth his voice, there is a multitude of waters in the heavens, and he caufeth the vapours to afcend from the ends of the earth; he maketh lightnings with bain, and bringeth forth the wind otit of his treasures.

14 Every man is brutish in bis knowledge; every founder is confounded by the graven image: for his molten image is fallehood, and there is no breath in them.

15 They are vanity, and the work of errors: in the time of their vifitation they thall perish.

16 The portion of Jacob is not like them tot he is the former of all things: and Ifrael is the rod of his inheritance: The LORD of hofts is his name.

17 Gather up thy wares out of the land, Oinhabitant of the fortrefs.

18 For thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will fling out the inhabitants of the land at this once, and will distress them, that they may find it fo.

19 Woe is me for my hurt! my wound is grievous but I faid, Truly this is a grief,

and I must bear it.

20 My tabernacle is fpoiled, and all my cords are broken; my children are gone forth of me, and they are not: there is none to ftretch forth my tent any more, and to fet up my curtains.

21 For the paftors are become brutish, and have not fought the LORD: therefore they fhall not profper, and all their flocks hall be fcattered.

22 Behold, the noife of the bruit is come, and a great commotion eut of the north ecuntry, to make the cities of Judah defoTate, and a den of dragons,

23 O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his fteps.

24 O LORD, Correct me, but with judg ment; not in thine anger, left thou bring me to nothing.

25 Pour out thy fury upon the heathen that know thee not, and upon the families that call not on thy name: for they have

God's covenant proclaimed. eaten up Jacob, and devoured him, and confumed him, and have made his habitation defolate.

CHAP. XI.

1 Jeremiah proclaimeth God's covenant, 8 rebuketh the disobedient Jews: 11 be propheneth evils to come upon them.

THE word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD, faying,

2 Hear ye the words of this covenant, and fpeak unto the men of Judah, and to the inhabitants of Jerufalem;"

3 And fay thou unto them, Thus faith the LORD God of Ifrael; Curfed be the man that obeyeth not the words of this covenant,

4 Which I commanded your fathers in the day that I brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, from the iron furnace, faying, Obey my voice, and do them, according to all which I command you: fo fhall ye be my people, and I will be your God.

5 That I may perform the oath which I have fworn unto your fathers, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is this day. Then answered I, and said, So be it, O LORD.

6 Then the LORD faid unto me, Proclair all these words in the cities of Judah, and in the streets of Jerufalem, faying, Hear ya the words of this covenant, and do them.

7 For I earnefily protested unto your fa thers in the day that i brought them up Out of the land of Egypt, even unto this day, rifing early and protefling, faying, Obey my voice.

8 Yet they obeyed not, nor inclined their ear, but walked every one in the imagină. tion of their evil heart: therefore I will bring upon them all the words of this covenant, which I commanded them to do, but they did them not.

9 And the Logo faid unto me, A confpiracy is found among the men of Judah, and a mong the inhabitants of Jerufalem.

to They are turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, which refused to hear my words; and they went after other gode to ferve them: the houfe of Ifrael and the houfe of Judah have broken my covenant. which I made with their fathers.

11 Therefore thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will bring evil upon them, which they fhall not be able to efcape; and though they shall cry unto me I will not hearken unto them.

12 Then fhall the cities of Judah and inhabitants of Jerufalem go, and cry unto the gods unto whom they offer incenfe: but they hall not fave them at all in the time of their trouble.

13 For according to the number of thy cities were thy gods, O Judah; and according to the number of the streets of Jerufalem have ye fet up altars to that thameful thing, even altars to burn incenfe unto Baal.

14 Therefore pray not thou for this people, neither litt up a cry or prayer for them: for I will not hear them in the time that they cry

unto me for their trouble.

15 What hath my beloved to do in mine houfe, feeing the hath wrought lewdness with many, and the holy fleth is palled from thee? When thou doeft evil, then thou rejoicaft.

Teremiah, complaining of the wicked's profperity, by faith feeth their ruin. 14 God's promise to the penitent.

Righteous art thou, O LORD, when I plead with thee: yet let me talk with thee of by judgments: Wherefore doth the way of the wicked profper? Wherefore are all they happy that deal very treacherously!

2 Thou hait planted them; yea, they have taken root they grow; yea, they bring forth fruit: thou art near in their mouth, and far from their reins.

3 But thou, O LORD, knoweft me: thou

hait feen me, and tried mine heart toward thee: pull them out like sheep for the flaughter, and prepare them for the day of laughter.

4 How long fhall the land mourn, and the herbs of every field wither, for the wicked nefs of them that dwell therein? The beats are confumed, and the birds; because they Said, He thall not fee our laft end.

5 If thou haft run with the footmen, and they have wearied thee, then how canft thou contend with horfes and if in the land of peace, wherein thou truftedt, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the fwelling of Jordan?

6 For even thy brethren, and the houfe of thy father, even they have dealt treacherously with thee; yea, they have called a multitude after thee; believe them not, though they Speak fair words unto thee.

7I have forfaken mine house, I have left mine heritage; I have given the dearly beloved of my foul into the hand of her enemies.

8 Mine heritage is unto me as a lion in the forest; it crieth out againft me: therefore

have I hated it.

9 Mine heritage is unto me as à fpeckled Blid, the birds round about are against her,

come to devour.

to Many pastors have deftroyed my vine. yard, they have trodden my portion under loot, they have made my plealant portion a defolate wilderness.

11 They have made it defolate, and being defolate it mourneth unto me; the whole land is made deiolate, because no man layeth it to heart.

12 The fpoilers are come upotr all high places through the wildernets: for thefword of the LORD thall devour from the e end of the land even to other end end of the land: no flesh thall have peace.

13 They have town wheat, but fhall reap thoras: they have put themselves to pain, but thall not profit; and they thali be asham ed of your revenues, becaule of the herce anger or the LORD.

14 Thus faith the LORD against all mine evil neighbours, that touch the inheritance which I have canfed my people Ifrael to in. herit; Behold, I will pluck them out of their land, and pluck out the house of Judah from among them.

15 And it thall come to pafs, after that I have plucked them out I will return, and have companion on them, and will bring them again, every man to hus heritage, and every man to his land.

16 And it shall come to país, if they will diligently learn the ways of my people, to Twear by my name, The LORD liveth; as they taught my people to fwear by Baal; then thail they be built in the midff of my people.

17 But if they will not obey, I will utterly pluck up and destroy that nation, faith the LORD. CHAP. XIII.

By the type of a linen girdle, the people's defruttion is prefigured. 12 By the battles filled with wine, their drunkenness in mifery foretold.

THUS faith the LORD unto me, Go and get thee a linen girdle, and put it upon thy loins, and put it not in water.

2 So I got a girdle according to the word of the LORD, and put it on my loins.

3 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, faying,

4 Take the girdle that thou hast got, which is upon thy loins, and arife, go to Euphrates, and hide it there in a hole of the rock.

5 So I went and hid it by Euphrates, as the LORD commanded me.

6 And it came to pafs after many days, that the LORD faid unto me, Arife, go to Euphrates, and take the girdle from thence, which I commanded thee to hide there.

7 Then I went to Euphrates, and digged, and took the girdle from the place where i had hid it; and, behold, the girdle was matred, it was profitable for nothing.

8 Then the word of the Loko came unto me, faying,

9 Thus faith the LORD, After this manner will i mar the pride of Judah, and the great pride of Jerufalem.

10 This evil people, which refuse to hear my words, which walk in the imagination of their heart, and walk after other gods, to ferve them, and to worship them, shall even

12 Therefore thou shalt fpeak unto them this word; Thus faith the LORD God of If rael, Every bottle shall be filled with wine: and they thall fay unto thee, Do we not certainly know that every bottle fhall be filled with wine!

13 Then halt thou fay unto them, Thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land, even the kings that fit upon David's throne, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the inhabitants or Jerufalem, with drunkennefs.

14 And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the fons together, faith the LORD: I will not pity, nor fpare, nor have mercy, but destroy thein.

15 Hear ye, and give ear; be not proud: for the LORD hath spoken.

16 Give glory to the LORD your God, before he caule dark nefs, and before your feet ftumble upon the dark mountains, and, while ye look for light, he turn it into the shadow of death, and make it grofs darkness.

17 But if ye will not hear it, my foul fhall weep in fecret places for your pride; and mine eyes fhall weep fore, and run down with tears, because the LORD's flock is carried away captive.

18 Say unto the king and to the queen, Humble yourselves, it down; for your principalities thall come down, even the crown of your glory.

19 The cities of the fouth fhall be shut up, and none thall open them: Judah fhall be carried away captive all of it, it fhall be wholly carried away captive.

20 Lift up your eyes, and behold them that come from the north: where is the flock that was given thee, thy beautiful flock?

21 What wilt thou fay wher he fhall punish thee? For thou haft taught them to be captains, and as chief over thee: Shall not forrows take thee, as a woman in

26 Therefore will I difcover thy fkirts upon thy face, that thy fhame may appear.

The grievous famine, caufeth Jeremiah to

2 Judah mourneth, and the gates thereof languith; they are black unto the ground; and the cry of Jerufalem is gone up.

3 And their nobles have fent their little ones to the waters: they came to the pits, and found no water; they returned with their veifels empty; they were ashamed and confounded, and covered their heads.

4 Because the ground is chapt, for there was no rain in the earth, the plowmen were ashamed, they covered their heads.

5 Yea, the hind alfo calved in the field, and forfook it, because there was no grafs.

6 And the wild affes aid ftand in the high places, they fnuffed up the wind like dra. gons; their eyes did tail, because there was no grafs.

9 Why shouldeft thou be as a man antoni ed, as a mighty man that cannot fave? Yet thou, O LORD, art in the midst of us, and we are called by thy name; leave us not.

10 Thus faith the LORD unto this peo ple, Thus have they loved to wander, they have not refrained their feet, therefore the LORD doth not accept them; he will now remember their iniquity, and vifit their fins.

II Then faid the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for their good.

12 When they faft, I will not hear their cry; and when they offer burnt offering and an oblation, I will not accept them: but 1 will confume them by the fword, and by the famine, and by the pentilence.

13 Then faid I, Ah, LoxD Gon! behold, the prophets fay unto them, Ye thall not fee the fword, neither thall ye have tamine; but I will give you affured peace in this place.

14 Then the LORD faid unto me, The prophets propefy lies in my name: I fint them not, neither have I commanded them, neither fpake unto them: they prophefy unto you a falfe vilion and divination, and a thing of nought, and the deceit of their heart.

15 Therefore thus faith the LORD concerning the prophets that prophefy in my name, and I fent them not, yet they fay, Sword and famine thall not be in this land; By fword and famine shall thofe prophets be confumed.

16 And the people to whom they prophefy fhall be caft out in the streets of Jerufalem becaufe of the famine and the fword; and they shall have none to bury them, them, their wives, nor their fons, nor their daugh ters: for I will pour their wickedness upon.

4 And I will caufe them to be removed into all kingdoms of the earth, because of Manaich the fon of Hezekiah king of Judan, for that which he did in Jerufalem.

5 For who hall have pity upon thee, O Jerufalem? or who shall bemoan thee? or who thall go afide to ask how thou doeft!
