the student. By this method the transition is very gradual from the most simple to the most complex parts. The part on Derivation, which consists in tracing English words to the Saxon, Latin, Greek, and French languages, will prove to be highly valuable, both to those who are to have, and those who are not to have, a classical education; while the rules and observations on the Principles of Composition will, to quote the words of an eminent writer, "teach the student to think, as well as to speak, accurately."

ENGLISH GRAMMAR.

ENGLISH GRAMMAR is the art of speaking and writing
the English language correctly.

It is divided into four parts; namely, Orthography,
Etymology, Syntax, and Prosody.

Orthography is derived from the Greek words orthos
and graphein, which mean to write correctly;' ortho-
graphy being that part of grammar which treats of the
forms and sounds of letters, and the correct method of
spelling words.

Etymology is derived from the Greek words etymos and
logos, which mean a true discourse.' Etymology treats
of the various kinds of the parts of speech, their deri-
vations, and the changes which they undergo.

Syntax is derived from the Greek words syn and taxis,
which mean an arrangement together.' Syntax treats
of the arrangement and union of words in sentences.
Prosody is derived from the Greek word prosodia, which
means 'accent.' Prosody treats of the sounds and quan-
tities of syllables, and the measures of verse.

LETTERS AND DIPHTHONGS.

A Letter is the element of speech used in writing
words. The English alphabet consists of twenty-six
letters.

Letters are divided into vowels and consonants.

The Vowels are five in number; namely, a, e, 2, 0.
