up before God that you may be kept pure from sin.

To those who know her not, surely it will touch their hearts to be told that these beautiful words have been written for them by one whose sympathy is too great to be caged within the narrow limits of a suffering body-and whose love goes forth, triumphing over pain, goes forth towards all for whom the suffering Saviour died.

May God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Ghost, accept her offering of love and bless her, and those for whom she writes and prays.

ROBERT LINKLATER.

Νου. 23, 1883.

First Day.

...

"And JESUS, walking by the sea of Galilee, saw two brethren, Simon called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers. And He saith unto them, Follow Me. And going on from thence, He saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and He called them."-S. MATT. iv. 18, 19, 21.

CHRIST'S disciples were many of them fishermen. He loved the sea. We may still think of Him as walking by the sea, though we cannot see Him; watching the men and boys in the herringboats or on the shore mending their nets, calling each one to follow Him.

"Follow Me." Let us do as He bids us, be pure as He was pure, unselfish, honest, holy. JESUS our SAVIOUR, Who dost call us to follow Thee, be Thou our Guide, and lead us in the Way Everlasting, for Thy Name's sake.

All our toil and labour, all our wants He knows,
JESUS, SON of Mary, shares our joys and woes,
Praise Him, brothers! praise Him! This and every day
He is nigh to help and cheer us on our way.

Second Day.

"Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed, for the LORD thy GOD is with thee whithersoever thou goest."-JOSHUA i. 9.

"To every man his work.”—S. MARK xiii. 34.

Our LORD chooses our work for us, and watches to see how we do it. It may be hard work, or it may be patient waiting, but His eye of love is upon us, and His Hand is near to help.

Blessed JESUS, Who didst labour with Thine Own Hands amongst men on earth, teach me to do all my work for Thee.

Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed;
Teach me to die that so I may

Rise glorious at the awful day.

Third Day.

"Who keepeth His promise for ever."-PSALM cxlvi. 5.

GOD'S promise is Eternal Life.

"And this is Life Eternal, that they might know Thee the Only True GOD, and JESUS CHRIST, Whom Thou hast sent."

To know and realize that GOD is our FATHER,

that JESUS is our Friend and SAVIOUR, that the HOLY SPIRIT is our Comforter and Guide, is not this eternal life, our strength, and hope, and peace? GOD keeps His promise to us-we must keep our promise to Him, the promise made at Baptism, and renewed at Confirmation,-" Not to be ashamed to confess the faith of CHRIST crucified, and manfully to fight under His Banner, against sin, the world, and the devil; and to continue CHRIST'S faithful soldier and servant unto my life's end." GOD will help us to keep our vow, and "the beloved of the LORD shall dwell in safety by Him; and the LORD shall cover him all the day long."--(Deut. xxxiii. 12.)

Defend, O LORD, me Thy servant, with Thy Heavenly Grace, that I may continue Thine for ever; and daily increase in Thy HOLY SPIRIT more and more, until I come unto Thy everlasting Kingdom. Amen.

Fight the good fight with all thy might,

CHRIST is thy strength, and CHRIST thy right;
Lay hold on life and it shall be

Thy joy and crown eternally.

Run the straight race through GOD's good grace, Lift up thine eyes, and seek His Face;

Life with its way before us lies,

CHRIST is the path, and CHRIST the prize.

Cast care aside, upon thy Guide:
Lean, and His mercy will provide ;
Lean, and the trusting soul shall prove
CHRIST is its life, and CHRIST its love.
Faint not, nor fear, His arms are near,
He changeth not, and thou art dear;
Only believe, and thou shalt see

That CHRIST is All in All to thee.

Fourth Day.

DR MONSELL.

"Every word of GOD is pure: He is a shield unto them that put their trust in Him."-Prov. Xxx. 5.

"But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment."-S. MATT. xii. 36.

Remembering this, dare you speak wicked words? It is not only swearing that Our LORD forbids, but every idle word-words that do no good either to the speaker or hearer. When boys and men waste their time standing at the corners, do they ever think that for every idle word they shall give account to GOD Himself— to GOD Whose every word is pure-GOD the All Holy?

"Who has been the better, let each one ask
