T. What do we pray to God (who is alone able to do all things) to give us?

S. "Grace; that we may cast away the works of darkness and put upon us the armour of light."

T. What are these works of darkness?

S. All sin, and wickedness, and ignorance.

T. Who is the ruler of the darkness of this world?

S. The devil; "for we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places." Ephes. vi. 12.

T. How does St. Paul exhort us as Christians? Rom. iii. 12; Ephes. v. 11.

S. "The night is far spent, the day is at hand; let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light." "And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them."

T. What do we promise at our Baptism?

S. "To renounce the devil and all his works, the pomps and vanities of this wicked world, and all the sinful lusts of the flesh."

T. Describe the whole armour of God, from Ephes. vi. 13-17.

S. "Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day; and having done all to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; and your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace: above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God."

T. What do we call this life in the Collect? and why?

S. Mortal; i. e. subject to death.

T. What did our Saviour show by His visiting us in this mortal life?

S. His great humility. He "made Himself of no reputation, and took upon Him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men." Phil. ii. 6, 7.

T. How did our Saviour describe His coming again to judge the quick and the dead? Matt. xxv. 31, 32.

S. "The Son of Man shall come in His glory, and all the holy Angels with Him; then shall He sit upon the throne of His glory. And before Him shall be gathered all nations; and He shall separate them one from another, as a shepherd divideth his sheep from the goats."

T. Who shall, then, be judged?

S. "The angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, He hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day." Jude, 6. "All that are in the graves shall hear His voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." John, v. 28, 29. "Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air." 1 Thess. iv. 17.

T. For what do we therefore pray in this Collect?

S. "When He shall come again in His glorious majesty to judge both the quick and dead, we may rise to the life immortal."

T. What do we mean by immortal?

S. Not subject to death; eternal.

T. How does St. Paul describe our Lord Jesus Christ's

glorious majesty in heaven? 1 Tim. vi. 15, 16.

S. "Who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings, and Lord of lords; who only hath immortality,

dwelling in the light which no man can approach unto; whom no man hath seen nor can see: to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen."

WHEN they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the Mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her : loose them, and bring them unto me. And if any man say aught unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Prophet, saying, Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them; and brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David; Blessed is he that cometh in the Name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest. And when He was come into Jerusalem all the city was moved, saying, Who is this? And the multitude said, This is Jesus the Prophet of Nazareth of Galilee. And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that

sold and bought in the temple; and overthrew the tables of the money-changers, and the seats of them that sold doves; and said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.

T. How did our Saviour show His willingness to be offered by going up to Jerasalem ?

S. Having declared to His disciples beforehand, "Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man shall be betrayed unto the Chief Priests and unto the Scribes, and they shall condemn Him to death, And shall deliver him to the Gentiles to mock, and to scourge, and to crucify Him and the third day He shall rise again." Matt. xx. 18, 19.

T. [Bethphage was a village of the priests, about a mile from Jerusalem, on Mount Olivet. The Mount of Olives, according to Zechariah, xiv. 4, " was before Jerusalem on the east," parted from the city by the brook Cedron or Kidron.]

T. By whom was our Saviour's entrance into Jerusalem prophesied ?

S. Zechariah, ix. 9. "Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion; shout, O daughter of Jerusalem: behold, thy King cometh unto thee: He is just, and having salvation; lowly, and riding upon an ass, and upon a colt the foal of an ass."

T. What words of the Collect does the manner of it recall?

S. "He came to visit us in great humility."

T. What was the cry of the multitude?

S. Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is He that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest! T. Hosanna in Hebrew signifies, "Save, I beseech

thee," or, "Give salvation." What did the people acknowledge Him to be?

S. "The prophet of Nazareth of Galilee," fulfilling that "which was spoken by the prophet, He shall be called a Nazarene." Matt. ii. 23.

T. What was the cry of the people in less than a week? 8. "Crucify Him! Crucify Him!" Luke, xxiii. 21. T. Where did Jesus first resort?

S. To the Temple of God.

T. i. e. the outer court of the temple, where the Gentile converts prayed, and whatever was required for the sacrifice was bought and sold. When were doves per

mitted as offerings? Lev. v. 7.

S. When the person was not able "to bring a lamb, then he shall bring for his trespass which he hath committed two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons, unto the Lord, one for a sin-offering, and the other for a burntoffering."

T. Did our Saviour permit their trading in the House of God?

S. No; "He cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves."

T. What are the words of Isaiah, lvi. 7, which Christ repeated?

S. "Mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people."

T. How may we sin in this way?

S. By letting our hearts dwell on our worldly concerns, our buying, and selling, and getting gain, instead of worshipping God with all our heart and soul in His holy Temple.
