LXXII. -521 0000 TH 'HE Author of the following Poems was born in the city of Philadelphia, June 8th, 1742; and was fent to the Academy there, soon after it was first opened, and before the Collegiate part of the Inftitution was begun. Having spent about fix years in Grammar Learning, his parents, who were reputable citizens, defigning him for merchandize, put him Apprentice; but not finding either his genius or inclination leading him much to that profeffion, he devoted more of his time to the service of the Muses, than to the bufinefs of the Counting-Houfe. Soon after the expiration of his apprenticeship, he accordingly returned to the College, and applied himself, with great diligence, to the study of Philosophy and the Sciences, till the Commencement, May 30th, 1765; when, on account of his great merit and promifing genius, he was, by fpecial Mandate of the Trustees, upon the recommendation of the Provoft and Faculty of Profeffors, complimented with a DIPLOMA for the degree of Mafter of Arts; although he had not taken the previous degree of Bachelor of Arts, on account, of the interruption in his courfe of ftudies, during the term of his apprenticeship. |
