The fountains can yield no supplies,
These hollows from water are free;
The tears are all wiped from these eyes,
And evil they never shall see.

CHRISTIAN PSALMIST

Seeking a Better Country.

1 LEADER of faithful souls, and Guide
Of all that travel to the sky,
Come, and with us, even us abide,
Who would on thee alone rely;
On thee alone our spirits stay,
While held in life's uneven way.
2 We have no biding city here,
But seek a city out of sight;
Thither our steady course we steer,
Aspiring to the plains of light;
Jerusalem, the saints' abode,
Whose founder is the living God.

3 Raised by the breath of love divine,
We urge our way with strength renewed;
The church of the first-born to join,
We travel to the mount of God;

With joy upon our heads arise,

And meet our Captain in the skies.

Man's Mortality, and God's Eternity.

1 IT is the Lord our Father's hand
Weakens our strength amidst the race;
Disease and death, at his command,
Arrest us and cut short our days.

2 Spare us, O Lord, aloud we pray,
Nor let our sun go down at noon;
Thy years are one eternal day,
And must thy children die so soon?
3 Yet in the midst of death and grief,
This thought our sorrow shall assuage:
'Our Father and our Saviour live;
God is the same through every age.'

4 'T was he this earth's foundation laid:
Heaven is the building of his hand;

This earth grows old, these heavens shall fade,
And all be changed at his command.

5 The starry curtains of the sky,
Like garments, shall be laid aside;
But still thy throne stands firm and high;
Thy church forever must abide.

6 Before thy face thy church shall live,
And on thy throne thy children reign;
This dying world shall they survive,
And the dead saints be raised again.

Living and Dying with God present.
1 I CANNOT bear thine absence, Lord;
My life expires if thou depart :
Be thou, my heart, still near my God,
And thou, my God, be near my heart.

2 I was not born for earth or sin,

Nor can I live on things so vile;
Yet I will stay my Father's time,
And hope and wait for heaven a while.

3 Then, dearest Lord, in thine embrace
Let me resign my fleeting breath;
And with a smile upon my face,
Pass the important hour of death.

BP. HEBER

Unspeakable Glories of Heaven.
I PRAISED the earth, in beauty seen
With garlands gay of various green;
I praised the sea whose ample field
Shone glorious as a silver shield;
And earth and ocean seemed to say
"Our beauties are but for a day!'

2 I praised the sun, whose chariot rolled
On wheels of amber and of gold ;
I praised the moon, whose softer eye
Gleamed sweetly through the summer sky!
And moon and sun in answer said,
'Our days of light are numbered!'

3 O God! O Good beyond compare!
If thus thy meaner works are fair!

If thus thy bounties gild the span
Of ruined earth and sinful man,
How glorious must the mansion be

Where thy redeemed shall dwell with thee!

Victory over Death.

10 FOR an overcoming faith

To cheer my dying hours,

To triumph o'er the monster death,
And all his frightful powers.

2 Joyful with all the strength I have,
My quivering lips should sing,
'Where is thy boasted victory, grave?
And where the monster's sting?'

3 Now to the God of victory
Immortal thanks be paid,

Who makes us conquerors, while we die, Through Christ our living head.

The Lord is my Helper.'

1 OFT as I look upon the road
That leads to yonder blessed abode,
I feel distressed and fearful:
So many foes the passage throng,
I am so weak, and they so strong,
How can my soul be cheerful!

2 But when I think of him whose power Can save me in a trying hour,

And place on him reliance,
My soul is then ashamed of fear;
And though ten thousand foes appear,
I bid them all defiance.

3 The dangerous road I then pursue, And keep the glorious prize in view; With joyful hope elated:

Strong in the Lord, in him alone,
Where he conducts, I follow on,
With ardour unabated.

4 O Lord, each day renew my strength, And let me see thy face at length, With all thy people yonder:

The Land of the Blest.

1 O, WHEN the hours of life are past,
And death's dark shade arrives at last,
It is not sleep, it is not rest;
'Tis glory opening to the blest.

2 Their way to heaven was pure from sin,
And Christ shall there receive them in:
There each shall wear a robe of light,
Like his, divinely fair and bright.

3 There, parted hearts again shall meet,
In union holy, calm, and sweet;

There, grief find rest; and never more
Shall sorrow call them to deplore.

4 There, angels will unite their prayers
With spirits bright and blest as theirs;
And light shall glance on every crown
From suns that never more go down.
5 No storm shall ride the troubled air;
No voice of passion enter there;
But all be peaceful as the sigh

Of evening gales, that breathe, and die.

6 For there the God of mercy sheds
His purest influence on their heads,
And gilds the spirits round the throne
With glory radiant as his own.

MONTGOMERY.

The Family Altar.

1 FOOD, raiment, dwelling, health, and friends, Thou, Lord, hast made our lot;

With thee our bliss begins and ends,

As we are thine, or not.

2 For these we bend the humble knee,
Our thankful spirits bow;

Yet from thy gifts we turn to thee;
Be thou our portion THOU!

For Domestic Worship.

1 PEACE be to this habitation;
Peace to all that dwell therein;
Peace the earnest of salvation;
Peace, the fruit of pardoned sin;
Peace, that speaks the heavenly Giver,
Peace, to worldly minds unknown;
Peace divine that lasts forever;

Peace, that comes from God alone.

2 Jesus, Prince of Peace, be near us,
Fix in all our hearts thy home;
With thy gracious presence cheer us;
Let thy sacred kingdom come;
Raise to heaven our expectation,
Give our favoured souls to prove
Glorious and complete salvation,
In the realms of bliss above.

Pious Education of Children.- Ps. 78.
1 LET children hear the mighty deeds
Which God performed of old;
Which in our younger years we saw,
And which our fathers told.

2 He bids us make his glories known;
His works of power and grace;
And we'll convey his wonders down,
Through every rising race.

3 Our lips shall tell them to our sons,
And they again to theirs ;
That generations yet unborn
May teach them to their heirs

4 Thus shall they learn in God alone
Their hope securely stands ;

That they may ne'er forget his works,
But practise his commands.
