Such as be foolish shall not stand in thy sight; for thou hatest all those who work vanity.

Thou shalt destroy those who speak falsehood; the Lord will abhor both the bloodthirsty and deceitful

man.

But as for me, I will come into thy house, even upon the multitude of thy mercy; and in thy fear will I worship toward thy holy temple.

Lead me, O Lord, in thy righteousness, because of mine enemies; make thy way plain before my face.

Let all those who put their trust in thee rejoice; they shall ever be giving of thanks, because thou defendest them; they who love thy name shall be joyful in thee.

For thou, Lord, wilt give thy blessing unto the righteous; and with thy favourable kindness wilt thou defend him as with a shield.

PSALM 7.

O LORD my God, in thee have I put my trust; save me from all those who persecute me, and deliver

me;

Lest he devour my soul like a lion, and tear it in pieces, while there is none to help.

O Lord my God, if I have done this thing; or if there be any wickedness in my hands;

If I have rewarded evil unto him who dealt friendly with me; (yea, I have delivered him who without any cause is mine enemy ;)

Then let mine enemy persecute my soul, and take it; yea, let him tread my life down upon the earth, and lay mine honour in the dust.

The Lord shall judge the' people; give sentence with me, O Lord, according to my righteousness, and according to the innocency that is in me.

Olet the wickedness of the ungodly come to an end; but guide thou the just.

For the righteous God trieth the very hearts and reins.

My help cometh of God, who preserveth those who are true of heart.

God is a righteous judge; and God is provoked every day.

I will give thanks unto the Lord, according to his

righteousness; and I will praise the name of the Lord most high. Now unto the King eternal, &c.

Be honour and glory, &c.

The Second Day.

MORNING PRAYER.

PSALM 8.

O LORD our Governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world! thou who hast set thy glory above the heavens !

Out of the mouth of very babes and sucklings hast thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies; that thou mightest still the enemy and the revengeful.

When I consider thy heavens, even the work of thy fingers; the moon and the stars which thou hast

ordained;

What is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou visitest him?

Thou madest him a little lower than the angels, and hast crowned him with glory and honour.

Thou makest him to have dominion over the

works of thy hands; and thou hast put all things under his feet;

All sheep and oxen, yea, and the beasts of the field;

The fowls of the air, and the fishes of the sea, and whatsoever passeth through the paths of the

seas.

O Lord our Governor, how excellent is thy name in all the world!

PSALM 9.

I WILL give thanks unto thee, O Lord, with my whole heart; I will speak of all thy marvellous works.

I will be glad and rejoice in thee; I will sing praise to thy names, O thou Most High.

Thou hast rebuked the heathen, and destroyed the ungodly; thou hast put out their name for ever and

ever.

Desolations have consumed the enemy for ever; and as to the cities which thou hast destroyed, their memory is perished with them.

But the Lord shall endure for ever; he hath prepared his throne for judgment.

And he shall judge the world in righteousness, and minister true judgment unto the people.

The Lord also will be a defence for the oppressed, even a refuge in time of trouble.

And they who know thy name, will put their trust in thee; for thou, Lord, hast never failed those who seek thee.

O praise the Lord who dwelleth in Sion; show the people of his doings.

For when he maketh inquisition for blood, he remembereth them, and forgetteth not the complaint of the poor.

The heathen are sunk down in the pit that they made; in the same net which they hid privily, is their own foot taken.

The Lord is known to execute judgment; the ungodly is ensnared in the work of his own hands.

The wicked shall be turned into the pit, and all the people who forget God. For the poor shall not always be forgotten; the patient abiding of the meek shall not perish for

ever.

Arise, O Lord, and let not man prevail; let the

heathen be judged in thy sight.

Put them in fear, O Lord; that the heathen may know themselves to be but men.

Now unto the King eternal, &c.

Be honour and glory, &c.

EVENING PRAYER.

PSALM 11.

IN the Lord put I my trust; how say ye then to my soul, that she should flee as a bird unto the hill?

For lo the ungodly bend their bow, and make ready their arrows within the quiver, that they may privily shoot at those who are true of heart.

If the foundation be cast down, what can the righteous do?

The Lord is in his holy temple; the Lord's throne is in heaven.

His eyes consider the poor; and his eyelids try the children of men.

The Lord trieth the righteous; but the ungodly and him who delighteth in wickedness, doth his soul abhor.

Upon the ungodly he

shall rain snares, fire and brimstone, storm and tempest; this shall be the portion of their cup.

For the righteous Lord loveth righteousness; his countenance will behold the thing that is just,

PSALM 12.

HELP, Lord, for the godly man ceaseth, for the faithful fail from among the children of men.

They speak vanity every one with his neighbour; they do but flatter with their lips, and dissemble in

their double heart.

The Lord shall root out all deceitful lips, and the tongue that speaketh proud things;

Who have said, With our tongue will we prevail; we are they who ought to speak; who is lord over us?

Now for the oppression of the needy, and because of the deep sighing of the

[blocks in formation]

earth is tried, and purified seven times in the fire.

Thou shalt keep them, O Lord; thou shalt preserve them from this generation for ever.

PSALM 15.

LORD, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? or who shall rest upon thy holy hill?

Even he who leadeth an

uncorrupt life, and doeth the thing which is right, and speaketh the truth from his heart.

He who hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbour, nor slandered his neighbour.

He who despiseth a worthless oureth those who fear the person, but honLord.

He who sweareth unto his neighbour, and disappointeth him not, though it were to his own hindrance.

He who hath not given his money upon usury, nor taken a bribe against, the innocent.

Whoso doeth these things. shall never fall.

PSALM 16, PRESERVE me, O God; for in thee have I put my trust.

O my soul, thou hast said unto the Lord, Thou art my God; my good deeds are nothing unto thee;

But to the saints who are on the earth, and to the excellent, in whom is all my delight.

They who run after another god, shall have great trouble.

Their drink offerings of blood will I not offer; neither make mention of their names with my lips.

The Lord himself is the portion of mine inheritance, and of my cup; thou shalt maintain my lot.

The lot is fallen unto me in a fair ground; yea, I have a goodly heritage.

I will thank the Lord for giving me warning; my secret thoughts also instruct me in the night sea

son.

I have set the Lord alway before me; for he is on my right hand, therefore I shall not fall.

Wherefore my heart was glad, and my tongue rejoiced; my flesh also shall rest in hope.

For why? thou shalt not leave my soul in the grave; neither shalt thou suffer

thy holy one to see corruption.

Thou shalt show me the path of life; in thy presence is fulness of joy; and at thy right hand there are pleasures for evermore. Now unto the King eter

nal, &c.

Be honour and glory, &c.

The Third Day.

MORNING PRAYER.

PSALM 18.

I WILL love thee, O Lord, my strength; the Lord is my rock, and my defence; my Saviour, my God, and my might, in whom I will trust; my buckler, the horn also of my salvation, and my refuge.

I will call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised; so shall I be safe from mine enemies.

When the waves of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodliness made me afraid;

When the sorrows of the grave surrounded me, and the toils of death overtook me;
