Is there a time to be idle?

No.

What are we to do?

We are to work whilst it is day, and to do good to all, as we have opportunity.—John iv. 4. 2 Peter i. 5, 10; iii. 14. Deut. iv. 9; vi. 7, 17.

What is said of idleness?

"The idle soul shall suffer hunger."

Prov. xix. 15; xxxiii. 21.

Ezek. xv. 49. What is said of idle talking?

"The talk of the lips tendeth only to penury."-Prov. xiv. 23; x. 19. Jas. i. 19.

Upon what were these four first commandments written?

Upon one table of stone.

Who wrote them?

God himself.

What do they contain?

Our duty to God.

What is the particular duty of the first commandment?

"To believe in God, to fear him, and to love him with all my heart, with all my mind, with all my soul, and with all my strength." -Mark xii. 30. Luke xii. 5. Heb. xi. 6. What is the duty of the second commandment?

"To worship him, to give him thanks, to put my whole trust in him; and to call upon him."--Matt. iv. 10; vii. 7. Eph. v. 20. 1 Pet. v. 7.

What is the duty of the third and fourth commandments?

"To honour God's holy name and his word, and to serve him truly all the days of my life."

DUTY TO MAN.

What is the fifth commandment?
"Honour thy father and thy mother, that

thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee."

What is required in this commandment?

"To love, honour, and succour my father and mother, to honour and obey the king, and all that are put in authority under him; to submit myself to all my governors, teachers, spiritual pastors and masters; to order myself lowly and reverently to all my betters."

Why do you include all these persons in the fifth commandment, when it only mentions " our father and mother?"

Because all these persons either give us the protection, or exercise over us the authority of parents.

What is the duty of children to parents? Honour, obedience, love, and support?Matt. xv. 4-6. Mark vii. 10-14. Eph. vi. 1. 1 Tim. v. 4.

What is the duty of parents to children? Protection, instruction, and correction. To rule and train them in the fear of God. Gen. xviii. 19. Deut. iv. 9, 10; vi. 6; xi. 19;

1 Sam. iii. 13. Prov. xiii. 13, 24; xxii. 13; xxiii. 14; xxix. 17. Eph. vi. 4. Heb. xii. 7. What is your duty to "the king" and persons in authority ?"

Clergymen, the ministers of the church.

Who are your" spiritual governors ?" All who have authority in the church in spiritual matters.

Who can make spiritual governors?

Those only, who are governors themselves. Who made the first spiritual governors ? Our blessed Lord himself, when he ordained the first rulers of the church by breathing the Holy Ghost upon them, and promising to be with them (that is with them and their successors) even until the end of the world. -St. Matt. xxviii. 19, 20. St. John xx. 21

Who made the next spiritual governors?

The apostles. They ordained one apostle to be of their own order.-Acts i. 26. They ordained deacons to look after the temporal affairs of the church.-Acts vi. 2-7. Also ministers of congregations, called in our Testaments" presbyters" and "elders." Acts xiv. 23; xvi. 4. Also bishops, as Timothy, Titus, Clement, and others, who had authority over the presbyters, and who were commanded to ordain others, even as they themselves had been ordained. 2 Tim. ii. 2. Titus i. 5.

What is our duty towards them?

To esteem them very highly in love, for their work's sake; to honour those who are set over us in spiritual things, and to submit ourselves to them.-Heb. xiii. 17. 1 Tim. v. 17.

What is the duty of servants to their masters?

Honour, fidelity, diligence, submission, and obedience.-Eph. vi. 5-9. Titus xi. 9, 10. 1 Peter ii. 18. Col. iii. 22.
