COMMANDMENTS.

You said that your godfathers and godmothers did promise for you that you should keep God's commandments; tell me how many there be.

Which be they?

The same which God spake in the 20th chapter of Exodus, saying, I am the Lord thy God which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage."

Why do you say there are only "ten" commandments?

Because all the commandments of God are comprised in these ten, and they are the only commandments which were written by the finger of God, as laws for all his creatures. Where do you find them in the Bible? In the 20th chapter of Exodus.

First commandment?

"Thou shalt have no other gods but me." What does this forbid?

The worshipping of any other besides the one true and only God.-Deut. vi. 1, 4, 5, 14, 15.

What do we call the worship of false gods?

Idolatry.

Is there any sin in the Bible particularly called idolatry which we must be aware of? Yes; covetousness.-Col. iii. 5. Eph. v. What other sin are we reproved for? Making a god of our belly.-Phil. iii. 19. What does Ezekiel call our idols?

The sinful wishes of our hearts.-Ezek. xiv. 3, 4.

What does the first commandment require of us?

That we should take the Lord to be our God.-Josh. xxiv. 15.

Second commandment?

"Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of anything in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the waters under the earth. Thou shalt

not bow down to them nor worship them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and show mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments."

What does this forbid?

It forbids us to make any picture or image to worship the true God by.

What is the difference between this and the first commandment?

The first commandment forbids the worship of false gods. The second commandment forbids the worship of the true God in a false manner.

What does it command?

It commands us to worship the true God in the manner which he has ordained.

Upon whom does he "visit sin to the third and fourth generation ?"

Upon those who "hate" him.

To whom does he "show mercy?"

"To them who love him and keep his commandments."-Deut. vii. 9, 10, 11. Who need mercy?

Sinners only.

Third commandment?

"Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain."

What does this forbid?

The irreverent use of the name of God, or of anything which belongs to him.
