Mr. J. Bennett has received a very cordial letter of thanks from Mr. Massenet for his valuable collaboration in the production of the English version of "Manon."

The Court Journal, noticing the Stratford Musical Festival, observes :-"Englishmen, after ridiculing the Eisteddfod for many years, have commenced to imitate it.' The Annual Choral Festival of the Association of Tonic Sol-Fa Choirs will take place at the Albert Palace on July 11th, under the conductorship of Messrs. McNaught and Venables.

An organ built by Messrs. Richardson and Sons, of Camberwell, has been erected in St. Mary's, Preston, and is spoken well of by local authorities. The instrument has three manuals, pedal, and some thirty-six

stops.

Herr Goffrie, for many years second violin at the Musical Union, has arrived in London from San Francisco, where he is now settled, and presides over numerous classes of musical students of the violin, both male and female.

At Trinity Chapel, John Street, Edgware Road, the opening of a new organ-harmonium took place on June 22nd. This instrument, built by Mr. C. Laurent, is believed to be the largest of its kind in the United Kingdom, and one of the largest in the world. mounted in an elaborately carved oak case, with richly decorated pipe front, and measures 14 feet in height, by nearly 14 feet in width. This instrument contains 703 reeds, being 11 complete sets of 61 notes each (five octaves), and one half set of 32 notes, with 28 stops, two manuals, pedals, and several mechanical movements.

An excellent charity is the Music Publishers and Concert Assistant Provident Society (St. James's Hall, Piccadilly, W.) The committee desire to draw attention to the Society: it was established in 1861, at St. James's Hall, by a few well-known gentlemen connected with the music trade. Its purpose is to render assistance to members when unable to follow their employment through sickness, infirmity, or accident; medical attendance and medicine during affliction, and a sum of money payable at death; on a plan most equitable, economical, and sure, with the least possible expense or loss of time consistent with the holding of the management in their own hands. It differs materially from the generality of benefit societies, inasmuch as there are no additional payments demanded for deaths, etc., no reduction of benefits, no spending money exacted, no uncertain charges of any description. Although the society has been in existence for so many years, it has not yet been brought prominently before the notice of the musical profession. The The Tonic Sol-Fa Journal has a biographical notice, committee feel that it will not require any comment to with portrait, of the popular and esteemed Welsh insure from the musical profession that support and musician, Mr. David Jenkins, Mus. Bac., who is about patronage which this society so well deserves. The colto proceed to America to act as adjudicator at sundry lector is Mr. J. Fitzgerald, of 59, Walnut Tree Walk, KenEisteddfodau, etc., by the invitation of many Welsh nington Road. The money paid out by the society between 1861 and the present time amounts to over £1,500.

At the Marlborough Rooms, on June 20, Miss Amina Goodwin and Herr Alexander Kummer gave a pianoforte and violin recital. The vocalist was Miss Lena Little; violoncello, Herr Otto Leu; and accompanist, Miss Mary Carmichael.

friends in the West.

At a concert recently given by the South Hampstead Musical Society, the programme included two creditable works from the pen of the conductor, Mr. Arthur Greenish: a song, "The Dark and the Dawn," sung by Mr. Iver McKay, who received an encore; and a "Romance" for violin, played by Mr. B. Fletcher. Mr. J. F. Barnett's "Ancient Mariner " formed the leading work of a pleasing

selection.

"The

The Isle of Wight Choral Association lately held their Festival at St. Thomas's Church, Newport, I.W. A service of Sir G. J. Elvey and Best's fine anthem, Lord is great in Sion," were included in the music given. The music was well rendered, under the able, painstaking direction of Mr. E. Lemare, and Mr. W. Scadding was the organist, admirably doing his share of the work.

The organ of the parish church at Wisbeach, which was rebuilt in 1875 by Messrs. Forster and Andrews, of Hull, has just undergone a complete renovation. Two stops, which were included in the original specification but omitted on account of want of funds, have also been now added. The stops-the harmonic flute and salicional -are of beautiful tone. The completion of the organ was celebrated on June 18th by an organ recital given by Mr. Jude, of Liverpool.

At 1, Belgrave Square, S. W., the talented young pianist, Signorina Luisa Cognetti, gave a "matinée musicale" on June 25th. Signorina Cognetti had the assistance of the following artists: Signorina Alice Barbi, Mdlle. Marie Donaldi, Signor Mario Costa, Signor Isidore de Lara, and Signor Vittorio Carpi; solo pianoforte, Signorina Luisa Cognetti; conductors, Signor F. Paolo Tosti, Signor Luigi Denza, and Signor Luigi Caracciolo. The programme included selections from Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Schumann, &c.

Dr. Hiles observes in the Quarterly Musical Review :"From whatever fad the exclusion of women from our choirs continues, no one with a musician's feeling could excuse the intolerance which deprives church music of the greatest means of effect, by substituting, in lieu of rich-toned mature voices, the feeble pipings of boys; which banishes the adult whose experience of life, with truthfully in praise and prayer, and prefers the parrotits trials and sorrows, qualifies her to join heartily and like song of children, from whose lips the words must come with unmeaning hollowness. Further, no singing master could justify the extravagant ruin of hundreds of voices resulting from the undue strain entailed upon delicate organs that ought to be carefully protected and nurtured. A good, honest choir-boy is always in danger of injuring himself; and a lad without zeal for his work is constantly strengthening his lazy, careless propensities." These outspoken words do honour to the writer, and it is to be hoped that such timely sentences will aid in restoring female voices to our choirs, or assist in the re-establishment of the distinct chancel and musical choirs for the separate duties of leading the versicle singing and performing the service and anthem music. There never was any authority for the wholesale banishment of women's voices; and they are absolutely necessary for the just rendering of much of the finest sacred music, whether Roman or Anglican.

On the evening of Thursday in last week, Mr. Best gave the usual organ performance at the Crystal Palace, in lieu of Mr. Eyre. His programme included Mendelssohn's Organ Sonata, No. 4, a Scherzo in D by Capocci, Bach's Prelude and Fugue in G major, a cleverly written Andante, with variations by himself, a selection from Handel's "Water Music," the Bell Rondo of Morandi, an Introduction and Fugue by himself, and the brilliant This work contains short pieces of all modern and ancient "War March" from Horsley's "Gideon." Many pro- masters, to suit all tastes, easy and effectively arranged. minent organists and country musicians up in town during the Festival week were present, and must have been gratified to hear Mr. Best's masterly exposition of this programme.
