$duct HARVARD COLLEGE LINARY GIFT OF W. SUMMER APPLETON Copyright, 1897, By D. C. HEATH & Co. Printed by CARL H. HEINTZEMANN, Boston, U. S. A. PREFACE. THIS Collection of poems, selected and edited for use in classes, will have fulfilled its purpose if it supply the present need and prepare the way for further reading on the same subject. Molière, Racine and Corneille are, in the main, well taken care of; but when a teacher wishes to study, with some advanced class, Lamartine, de Musset, and Victor Hugo, the French Triad of the 19th century, the old difficulty of making bricks without straw is repeated. Except the admirable little volume on Alfred de Musset, published by Hachette, and one or two plays of Victor Hugo, there seems a dearth of available material. It is to supply this want, real or fancied, that I venture to add another Recueil de poésies to the number already existing. The attempt leaves much to be desired. The biographical notices are sketches, not lives. The Notes deal chiefly with the historical allusions and metaphorical expressions which seemed to present the greatest obstacles to the American student. Readers familiar with these poets will miss many a favorite poem; we crave their indulgence; l'embarras de richesse leads to many a mistake. Should the present experiment prove acceptable as a stepping-stone, it would be only a labor of love to continue the structure. LOUISE BOTH-HENDRIKSEN. SMITH COLLEGE, NORTHAMPTON, MASS. |
