SONETTO VII. AFTER LAURA's DEATH. BLEST Spirit! who, in pity to my woes, Beam'st on the darkness of the mournful night; While those angelic eyes, death could not close; Console me with their pure ethereal light. Oh! how I joy, that, when night's shadows fly, Your presence soothes me many a pensive hour; In each known haunt, as I again descry Those charms, that still command resistless pow'r. Lov'd haunts! where erst my lyre, now wet with tears, Sung your bright form, the grave will ne'er restore. Yet not your loss, mine only I deplore! And your return alone my anguish cheers: Then oh! return-and I'll again adore Your walk-your voice-your mien-the robes you wore! SONETTO VIII. SONNET VIII. AFTER LAURA's DEATH. THAT face, which every matchless charm com bin'd; Those eyes, that sparkl'd with the brightest flame, Death has eclips'd-and from the loveliest frame Sever'd the purest, most exalted mind. Thus in a moment has he taken all, And in dread silence clos'd an angel's strain; While sight, and hearing only can recall Mem'ry's past bliss, to heighten present pain. But lo! where LAURA, by kind pity borne, And sure her speech and looks are so divine, SONETTO IX.
