N this volume there are thirty Lessons.

Such a

number will cover a year of weekly classes in school, or of instructions in church; for we have to take six summer weeks off the year for the average parish, and more for secondary schools, four Sundays in addition for the quarterly festivals, and one or two more which are generally needed for some special instruction. Teachers also occasionally break the ordinary course for a special festival or a great national celebration: also they are almost certain to find that they have to divide some of the Lessons into two. The remaining occasions. will be filled by Revisions, which are very important, and would hardly be less than five or six, while in many places they might be more. One specimen Revision is given on p. 62. Most teachers will elect to give the first Revision after Lesson VI, and to have a second Revision for the next five Lessons, revising thenceforward on the average after every five Lessons, and ending, as here, with a general Revision of the whole introductory section of the Church Catechism, which is called the Covenant. I may add that in dealing with young or backward children, so much expansion and explanation will be necessary that all the Lessons will have to be divided, except a few from which the teacher will prefer to omit whole sections altogether.

These volumes are not intended only for those who use the Church Catechism as the framework of their instruction. The present writer has always done so, and has found it a very great help; nor can he discover any other basis so good. But, after the introductory section, the subject-matter is that which is common to most
