Mr URBAN,

Corn Bounty.-Charles Town Entries.

A

I will couce unter confideration of T is much expected the corn trade parliament this next feffions. Whether the bounty allow'd on corn exported is of real fervice to the nation in general, will be the fubject matter of confideration. I must confefs myfelf to be one of those who think it is not. The corn trade I will call a manufacture, and rank it amongst the best branches of tradewe have; but that, as well as any other of our manufactures, we must fell as B cheap abroad as our neighbours, clie we fhall foon lofe our trade. It then may be asked, why we cannot fell our corn abroad as cheap as other corn countries, without allowing a bounty? The chief reason, I think is, becaufe our corn lands are too high rented, in proportion to the corn lands of our neighbours. Inftead of remedying this great evil by fuffering the lands to fink to their natural value, it has been thought proper to allow a bounty, which I call an artifi cial value, and of no manner of service to the farmer, fhipper off, or any individual in the nation, but the land-owners, as every penny of it in my opinion goes into their pockets.

C

2. 49) for if other corn countries ty, which, if it ex right policy, here fhould give their exporters a like boun-

may be adopted by them) we must double our bounty or lose the trade, which demonftrates that it is not on a natural but an artificial foundation.]

Suppofe the growth of corn for two years to be alike in quantity and quality: Suppose the first year as much was fold as came to 100,000l. Suppose the next year the corn lands were lower'd in rent juft 100,000l. as much fold for export as the year before, and at the fame price as when the bounty was not taken off, Is it not plain the profit to the nation in general is the fame the fecond year as the firft? Is there not as much caf brought in, as much in the farmers pockets, the shipper off, and to every individual concerned? Of what real F fervice then is this bounty? Why truly I can fee none! It only takes from trade annually as much as the bounty comes to, and, as I faid before, puts itinto the land-owners pockets. I have much more to fay on this fubject, but am afraid you'll think this too long.

G

A CITIZEN. [Another gentleman hints, that if a fum was given (suppose, as above, or double, by parliament) to the land owners for which they fhould proportionably fall the rent of their tehants, it would be a great advantage to the nation; it would fave a prodigious H fum which is paid to officers; it would prevent giving bonds and much trouble to the merchant, and a great deal of perjury and frauds, (See Vol.xiii,
