WHILE it is a matter for congratulation that so much has

already been done towards the advancement of Catholic popular literature in connection with Education, it must be admitted that a great deal still remains to be accomplished, if we are to meet, in an adequate manner, the growing intelligence of our people, and especially of that large class of young persons who are annually leaving our schools to take their places in society.

A General readers of the present day require, in fact, to have specially prepared for them a body of literature, sufficiently solid and comprehensive in character, and at the same time intelligible and engaging in style; the whole being presented to them, moreover, in the most conve nient form, and at the most moderate price. Such a literature, it is conceived, should convey that amount of information on all branches of general knowledge History, Biography, Geography, Physical and Natural Science, &c.,-which may be best adapted for the great body of our people, and may tend more or less directly to prepare the young for their future position and duties in the world. Another object would be, to provide the inquiring youth or adult with a fund of materials for profitable reflection and study at leisure hours, as well as for innocent recreation; which, by pre-occupying and interesting the mind, should diminish the temptations to idleness or dangerous amusements. And dastly, it should aim at storing the mind with sound views of History, Science, &c.; and thus, in conjunction with more directly religious attacks and misrepresentaof the day.

teaching, help to form a barrier agitatt

tions of the anti Catholic and Infidel

To provide such a literature is the object of the present undertaking. The series, then, is intended-1st, to meet the wants of that large class of persons, young and ol 1, in the present day, who have little time for reading, or few opportunities of instruction; and whose means of purchase are at the same time limited; 2dly, to s rve as easy INTRO DUCTIONS on the several subjects above mentioned, so as to be useful to those who may afterwards have opportunities for farther study. In this respect the Series may be considered as auxiliary to the higher class of Educational and other Works already published, or now in progress. Detailed Prospectuses may be had on application. The average price of the volumes will be One Shilling.

A CATALOGUE OF BOOKS,

Religious and General,

INCLUDING BOOKS FOR CHILDREN.

†Alice Sherwin a historical Tale of the Days of Henry VIII. (Popular Library Series.) 3s.; cloth, 3s. 6d.

†A Kempis, The Following of Christ, in four books; a new translation, beautifully printed in royal 16mo, with borders round each page, and illustrative engravings after designs by the best German artists. Cloth, 3s. 6d. ; calf, 6s. 6d. ; morocco, 8s.; richly gilt, 10s. 6d. by post fid, extra.

A few copies are printed on large paper, making a handsome volume for a present or for a library, in elegant calf or morocco bindings, 10s. 6d., 13s., 15s. It may also be had with a "Summary of Contents," edited by Dr. Newsham, price 6d. extra.

"Among all the previously-existing translations, whether Catholic or Protestant, of the Imitatio Christi, none could be considered as satisfactory. The best of the former was, of course, Bishop Challoner's; but this is often a paraphrase rather than a translation, and often weakens the force of the original: and of the latter, the Oxford edison, though the best, is by no means faithful, even where it is not (as in Book IV.) intentionally altered. The present version aims at keeping as close to the Latin text as a good English style will admit. It has been four times revised in passing through the press; and its gradually increasing sale proves the successful result of the care and diligence bestowed upon it."
