+Sconce. The Testimony of Antiquity to the Supremacy of the Holy See, with a view of the Scripture proof of St. Peter's preeminence, and a list of Protestant misrepresentations, by R. K. SCONCE, B.A. Oxon. 8vo, 5s.

The author states, in his Preface, "that he began the study of the Fathers at a time when he was strongly attached to the Anglican communion, and therefore under circumstances calculated to magnify in his eyes all that could be gathered from them in support of the Anglican claims, and to diminish the weight of whatever might appear opposed to that position. He pursued his studies with the arguments of Barrow, Hall, Taylor, &c. at his side, looking for their answers, and mastering them as he proceeded. The result was, that he found a consensus' of the Fathers against the Protestant theory, and in favour of Rome." The course of the whole inquiry is placed before the reader in this volume, and it will be found one of the most lucid and comprehensive treatises on the subject. The author was minister of the parish of St. Andrew, Sydney; became a Catholic, and died last year universally respected.
