Humility is the gentleman usher to glory-T. Adams. So it has been found in all ages, and by all classes of persons. He that humbleth himself shall be exalted. Jesus Christ humbled Himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the Cross: wherefore God hath highly exalted Him, and given Him a name which is above every name. The publican found humility ushered him into the glory of pardon and peace. Isaiah, in his humility, saw himself a man of unclean lips, and thereby entered into the glory of purity and honourable service for his God. David, by humility, came into the glory of the joy and triumph over all his enemies. This fact has its illustrations in nature and in social life. The humblest flowers are the most exalted. The valleys are lifted up, while the mountains are brought low. They are clothed with verdure and fruitfulness, while the lofty hills are barren and desolate. The little child is a favourite, while the proud man is despised and disesteemed.

I have seen and observed an infant full of envy, who could not yet speak; pale with anger, he looked at his fellow-suckling, with bitterness in his countenance. Augustine. Yes; it is with human nature in infancy, as with all other nature in infancy, the same as in the mature and the old. The mature is only the growth of the infant, and the old the evolution of the young. The leaf is in the bud; the fruit in the blossom. The thistle is a thistle, whether a month old or only just shooting up from the seed. The cockatrice is

in the egg. If the tiny whelp cannot bite you, it will show the temper to do so, and when it gets the power, will actually do it. Infants, pretty, innocent, feeble, sweet, as they may seem, contain the possibilities of depraved developments, and even show sometimes the budding of them too plainly to be denied. Alas, for your teachers of innocent human nature! Let them study their infants, if they have any, and there even, shall they discern, like Augustine, the beginnings of envy and other evils.

"Men do not dread to believe; they long to believe.-P. Brooks. Then, why do they not believe? Are they wanting in power, or in will? It cannot be in power, seeing they de believe in things without number. If it is the want of will, why have they that want? Is it because of the absence of evidence? But is there not as much evidence for the truth of what they do not believe, as for the truth of what they do believe? Is there not at the back of the want of a will to believe, the lack of effort to believe? Are they not too much like a slave to some evil habit? He longs for freedom, but makes no effort to get it? Do they investigate the evidences on which the truths rest? If they believe, will not their belief involve them in an obligation to give up some loved evil, some cherished lust? some darling notions? Do they not love darkness rather than light, because their deeds are evil? Surely men can believe in things of the light as easily as in things of the darkness, if they will only come to the light!

"Scatter Thou the people that delight in war." Ps. lxviii. 30. Whoever they are, wherever they are, let them be scattered into isolation, solitude, and weakness. They are blood-thirsty men. They are enemies to peace, purity, happiness, and religion.

Apollyon is their king we know, And Satan is their god." They wickedly sacrifice human life and property, and spread sufferings and sorrows among the innocent. They make widows and fatherless children. They impose burdens on nations that are too heavy to be borne. They block the progress of trade and commerce. They rob, oppress; and are the occasion of scenes of iniquity and evil, over which the devils chuckle, and hell is jubilant. And what, in the name of

mercy and righteousness, do they involve nations in these things for? Is it for military ambition? Is it more national glory? Is it for royal prestige? Perish for ever in perdition, military ambition, national glory, and royal prestige, if they cannot be bought at a less cost than war has to pay for them.

Wesley calls war a "hellish art." That it is an art as prepared for, and followed, in civilized nations, needs no argument to show; and that it is hellish, its fruits demonstrate. What would be thought of two men studying the most effective way of murdering each other; and after they had finished their studies, proceeding to fight until one had either killed the other or maimed him? The law would seize them at once as transgressors, and the general sentiment of

society would hold them as bad as barbarians. What those two individuals would do, nations, or combinations of individuals, are doing in studying the art of war, and then going to fight each other to see which can conquor; AND WHAT FOR?

Let the following facts be pondered, and then let the reader say, Whether it is not the positive duty of every Christian, and especially of every Christian minister, to pray, to preach, and to work, that those who delight in war, may be scattered, and never more gathered? It has been estimated, by Dr. Thomas Dick, that fourteen thousand millions of human beings have fallen in the battles which man has waged against his fellow-creature, man. If this amazing number of men were to hold each other by the hand, at arm's length, they would extend over 14,583,333 miles of ground, and would encircle the globe on which we dwell 608 times. If we allow the weight of a man to be, on the average, one cwt., and that is if any thing below the mark, we shall come to the conclusion that 6,250,000 tons of human flesh have been mangled, disfigured, gushed, and trampled under foot. The calculation will appear more striking when we state that, if the forefingers only of every one of these fourteen thousand millions were laid out in a straight line, they would reach more than 600,000 miles beyond the moon; and, that if a person were to undertake to count the number, allowing nineteen hours a day, and seven days to the week, at the rate of 6,000 per hour, it would Occupy that person 336 years; and awful is the consideration that 350,000 pipes of human blood have been spilt in battles. This calculation, bear in mind, was made more than forty years ago; and there have been many dreadful battles fought

since then.

Elihu Burrit, on plough culture and sword culture, has the following: "What is the sum total paid for all the toil and skill which make England the wonder of

the world, for the productions of its soil and the rich finish of its landscapes ? Why, it is said there are 700,000 agricultural labourers to do all this work; and that their weekly wages average 10s. per head. Then all the agricultural labour bestowed upon England to make it what it was at the last harvest, cost £18,200,000. Now, then, let all who look with delight upon the country in the time of the golden corn, remember: let every one of those 700,000 labourers, remember; let all who were merry at the harvest time, remember, that England this very year appropriated £18,500,000 to the mere husbandry of war-for mere preparations for blasting, consuming, impoverishing war! That she paid more (by £300,000) for training men and instruments to reap down men on the battle field, than it would cost to till just such another England to all the perfection of agriculture which their country could shew during the last twelve months. English farmers, is not this a startling thought for you? Think of it when you plow, and sow, and reap.'

"Give me," says another writer, "the money that has been spent in war, and I will purchase every foot of land upon the globe. I will clothe every man, woman and child in an attire of which kings and queens would be proud. I will build a school-house on every hill side, and in every valley, over the whole earth. I will build an academy in every town, and endow it; a college in every state, and fill it with able professors; I will crown every hill with a place of worship, consecrated to the promulgation of the gospel of peace; I will support in every pulpit an able teacher of righteousness; so that on every Sabbath morning the chime on one hill should answer to the chime on another round the earth's wide circumference; and the voice of prayer, and the song of praise, should ascend like a universal holocaust to heaven."
