NOTICES

Punchi Nona: This is a story of female education and village life in Ceylon, by the Rev. S Langdon, and published by T. Woolmer, 2, Castle-street, City-road, London. It is a capital little book for Sunday School Libraries, and for presentation to Sunday School scholars.

Good News for Children, by the Rev. John Colwell, and published by Mr. Woolmer, is a book of the right sort for parents to place in the hands of their children and for teachers to present to their scholars. We would that books of this sort were multiplied a thousand-fold for the little folks.

OF BOOKS.

The Universal Mission of the Church of Christ, by Rev. B. Hellier, being the Fernley Lecture for 1884, and published by Mr. Woolmer, is an able and comprehensive view of the missions of the churches to the heathen. Christians would do well to read and ponder this Lecture to see wherein they are bound to help on the work of evangelizing the heathen world. The Reality of Faith; by Newman Smyth. London: F. Fisher Unwin, 26, Paternoster-square. We have read other works of Dr. Smyth before reading this; but we think that The Reality of Faith exceeds them. There is life, brilliancy, and power here, which makes one thank God for inspiring the author to write in such a spirit of truth and grace. There are few things to which we take exception, but on the whole these discourses are instructive, invigorating, and edifying. Paying the Pastor Unscriptural and Traditional; by James Beaty, D.C.L., Q.C., M.P., ex-Mayor of Toronto, Canada. London. F. Fisher Unwin, 26, Paternoster-square. We cannot speak of this work in such laudatory terms as we have of the former. There is too much of Plymouthism here for our taste. Nevertheless, there are things in it of which we approve. Its fault is in trying to make apostolic custom obligatory in our day; and its excellency is in showing what is the duty of the church to the ungodly world around. With all its peculiar views, it shows the scholar and the Christian, and is a book that may be read with profit.

First Principles of Faith; by Marshall Randles. London: Hodder and Stoughton. This is a book to read and think over; which cannot be said of the bulk of books published in these days. A Local Preacher that wants to read solid thoughts against the flimsy arguments of the various forms of Scepticism of the times cannot do better than read this book. Mr. Randles

has done well in other works that he has written, but in this he has done best of all. We cordially and earnestly commend it to all thougtful and intelligent Local Preachers.

The Question of Questions-is Christ indeed the Saviour of the world? By Rev. Thomas Allin. London: T. F. Unwin, 26, Paternoster-square. This book treats of a subject in which we have always felt a lively interest. It is too one-sided in its arguments to suit our taste. Evidently the author was prejudiced in favour of the subject he defends before he undertook his task. Everything in Scripture that favours his views must be taken as it stands; but what goes against him must be qualified and interpreted so as not to go against him, We think that, while he makes good his view of the question of which he treats, he is far from nullifying the question that he opposes. If he has much to say against eternal punishment, there is more to be said in its favour. We do not think that he has settled the question on which he writes. This is done by the Scriptures without note or comment. "Is Christ indeed the Yes; most Saviour of the world ?'' decidedly, as we read the question and answer it from the Scriptures in their own light. No; most decidedly, as Mr. Allin puts the question and answers it in his own light.

The Joy of the Ministry; by the Rev. F. R. Wynne, M.A. Hodder and Stoughton. This is a work designed to "increase the efficiency and deepen the happiness of pastoral work." We hesitate not to say that it is highly calculated to accomplish its purpose. Young Ministers in every church, and especially in the Establishment, would do well to read it. Its spirit is excellent, its counsels wise, and its admonitions timely. There are two or three chapters from which we hope to cull a little fruit for the benefit of our readers; enough, perhaps, to give them a wish to have the whole volume.

Fxpository Sermons and Outlines on the Old Testament. London: Hodder and Stoughton. The contents of this volume are the products of various eminent preachers in the Church of England, together with a few from Nonconformist Ministers. The Sermons and Outlines differ in merit. There are, however, some fine specimens of ministerial talent. We may instance, among the number, Canon Liddon's, Archdeacon Farrar's, Dr. Stanford's, Dr. Stubbs', and Dr. Vaughan's.

From GARTH WILKINSON, Esq., M.D.,

F. W. Darlow, Esq.

Sir, I am able to certify that I have used your Magnetine Appliances pretty largely in my practice, and that in personal convenience to my patients they are unexceptionable, and far superior to any invention of the kind which I have employed; and that of their efficacy, their positive powers, I have no doubt. I have found them useful in constipation, in abdominal congestion, in neuralgia, and in many cases involving weakness of the spine, and of the great organs of the abdomen. In the public interest I wish you to use my unequalled testimony in favour of your Magnetic Appliances. I remain, yours faithfully, GARTH WILKINSON, M.D., M.R.C.S.E.

From M. C. SOUTTER, Esq., M.R.C.S. Eng.,

&c., &c.

8, Cumberland-terrace, Finsbury-park, N. Gentlemen,-I have recommended your Magnetine Appliances in numerous instances, and have found them of great service in cases of Whooping Cough, Croup, Asthma, Rheumatism, Dyspepsia, and various others, where want of vital energy has been the prominent symptom. I am quite satisfied that a natural stimulant, such as Magnetism, may be of the highest possible service in many diseases where an artificial stimulant may be hurtful. I am hopeful that the time may soon come when the curative and alleviating powers of Magnetism and Electricity, in all their various forms, will be fully realised and used by the profession. Believe me, yours faithfully,

M. C. SOUTTER, M.R.C.S., &c. To Messrs. Darlow and Co.

LUNG INVIGORATOR.

This is recommended in cases of incipient consumption, obstinate cough, weakness of the lungs, asthma, and bronchitis. It covers the entire surface of the lungs, back and front, and forms an excellent appliance as a Lung Protector, especially for winter use and night travelling.

The magnetic influence of this appliance, which penetrates the tubes and tissues of the Lungs, has in many cases given almost immediate relief, and effected rapid cures.

On the 3rd October, 1883, the Rev. J. CHARLESWORTH writes:-"Will you be good enough to forward one of your Chest Protectors? I have worn one during several winters, with great benefit."
