The Gospel. John vi. 5. (6) WHEN Jesus then lifted up his eyes, and saw a great company come unto him, he saith unto Philip, "Whence shall we buy "bread that these may eat?" 6. And this he said to prove him : for he himself knew what he 7. would do. Philip answered him, "Two hundred pennyworth of "bread is not sufficient for them, "that every one of them may 8. Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, in number about five thoufand. And 11. Jesus took the loaves: and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. When they were 12, filled, he said unto his disciples, "Gather up the fragments that "remain, that nothing be lost." Therefore they gathered them to- 13. gether, and filled twelve baskets with the fragments of the five barley loaves, which remained over and above unto them that had eaten. Then those men, 14. when they had seen the miracle that Jesus did, said, "This is of a "truth that Prophet that should come into the world."

If there be any more Sundays before Advent Sunday, the Service of some of those Sundays that were omitted after the Epiphany shall be taken in, to supply so many as are here wanting. And if there be fewer, the overplus may be omitted: Provided that this last Colle&t, Epistle, and Gospel, shall always be used upon the Sunday next before Advent.

The deliverance re- v.8. ferred to shall so far surpass the deliverance from Egypt, that whereas the deliverance from Egypt has hitherto been looked up to as the great instance of God's interposition; the second deliverance shall so completely eclipse it, as to be the only deliverance ever again named. It shall overwhelm by its superiority all remembrance of the former.

Saint Andrew's Day.

The Collect.

ALMIGHTY God, who didst give such grace unto thy holy Apostle Saint Andrew, that he readily obeyed the calling of thy Son Jesus Christ, and followed him without delay; Grant unto us all, that we being called by thy holy Word, may forthwith give up ourselves obediently to fulfil thy holy Commandments, through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Epistle. Rom. x. 9. If thou shalt confess (c) with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead,

(c) "Confess," &c. Making inward conviction and open profession the two requisites: our Saviour put the necessity

of a bold undaunted avowal of our faith in a strong light, Matt. x. 32. 33. "Whosoever shall confess me before "men, him will I confess also before my "Father which is in Heaven: but who"soever shall deny me before men, him "will I also deny before my Father "which is in Heaven." If such stress was then laid upon it when the avowal of Christianity exposed its professors to per secution and great temporal disadvantages, is it not equally incumbent upon every one now boldly and fearlessly to acknowledge his faith wherever it can be of service to religion, and to stand forward as one of its champions whenever it is assailed?

(d) "The scripture," i. e. Is. xxviii. 16. The passage there refers clearly to the Messiah." Behold, I lay in Sion for "a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a "precious corner stone, a sure founda"tion: he that believeth shall not make "baste," i. e. shall have no occasion to fly, &c. Bp Lowth translates it, "he "that trusteth in him shall not be con"founded."

(e) "No difference," &c. This is to

thou shalt be saved. For with Ic the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture (d) saith," Who- 11. "foever believeth on him shall "not be ashamed." For there 12. is no difference (e) between the Jew and the Greek (ƒ): for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him. For "whosoever (g) shall call upon "the name of the Lord shall be "saved." How then (b) shall 14 they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher? and how shall they preach, ex- 15. cept they be sent ? as it is writ

are all one in Christ Jesus ;" and to the same purpose is Col. iii. 11. Christ ianity knows no distinction of country, station, or sex In the language of the Te Deum, Christ "hath opened the "kingdom of Heaven to all believers."

(g)" Whosoever," &c. This is a 13 quotation from Joel ii. 32. The prophet had just stated in the name of the Lord, "the sun shall be turned into darkness, " and the moon into blood, before the "great and the terrible day of the Lord," (probably alluding to the time of the de struction of Jerusalem), and then he adds, "and it shall come to pass, that "whosoever shall call on the name of the "Lord shall be delivered." This pas sage was probably referred to on account of the general word "whosoever."

(b)"How then," i. e. "but how." là This to the end of verse 15. seems put as an objection on the part of the Jews, to give the opportunity of answering it; and from verse 16. inclusive, to the end of the chapter, is the answer.

GOD spake these words, and said, I am the Lord thy God; Thou shalt have none other gods but me.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not make to thyself any graven image, nor the likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or in the earth beneath, or in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down to them, nor worship them: For I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, and visit the sins of the fathers upon the chil

dren, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and shew mercy unto thousands in them that love me, and keep my Commandments.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

People. Lord, have mercy upon ús, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

1 Minister. Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath-day. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all that thou hast to do; but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God. In it thou shalt do no manner of work, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, thy man-servant, and thy maid ser vant, thy cattle, and the stranger that is within thy gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the se venth day wherefore the Lord blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it.

People. Lord, have mercy upon us, and incline our hearts to keep this law.

Minister. Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, we are taught by thy holy Word, that the hearts of kings are in thy rule and governance, and that thou dost dispose and turn them wisdom; We humbly beseech as it seemeth best to thy godly thee so to dispose and govern the heart of GEORGE thy servant, our King and Governor, that in all his thoughts, words, and works, he may ever seek thy honour and glory; and study to preserve thy people committed to his charge, in wealth, peace, and godliness.
