a And the Scripture was fulfilled, which saith, And he was numbered with the transgressors.

a Therefore will I divide him a

portion with the great, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong; because he hath poured out his soul unto death: and he was numbered with the transgressors; and he bare the sin of many, and made intercession for the transgressors, Isa. liii. 12. For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors, Luke xxii. 37.

* And he brought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the

sepulchre. And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid, xv. 46, 47. And he laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out of the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre, Matt. xxvii. 60, 61.

VER. 4.

A. D. 33.

Καὶ ἀναβλέψασαι θεωροῦσιν ὅτι ἀποκε κύλισται ὁ λίθος· ἦν γὰρ μέγας σφόδρα.

And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

a And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it, Matt. xxviii. 2. And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre, Luke xxiv. 2. The first day of the week cometh Mary Magdalene early, while it was yet dark, unto the sepulchre, and seeth the stone taken away from the sepulchre, John xx. 1.

form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they talked together of all these things which had happened. And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the Chief Priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this,

to-day is the third day since these things were done. Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre: And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that

And they, when they had heard that spoken! Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself. And they drew nigh unto the village whither they went and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them. And

• And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them. Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and bath appeared to Simon. And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread, Luke xxiv. 33-35.

VER. 14.

* Afterward he appeared unto the ele ven as they sat ut meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he had risen.

* Or, together.

* And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit. And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have. And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet. And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat? And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb, Luke xxiv. 36-42. Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus, and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you: And when he had so said, he shewed

Ὁ πιστεύσας καὶ βαπτισθεὶς, σωθήσεται· ὁ δὲ ἀπιστήσας, κατακριθήσεται. a He that believeth band is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

a And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel, Mark i. 15. Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved, Luke viii. 12. But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name, John i. 12. And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. For God so loved the world, that he gave his onlybegotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only-begot. ten Son of God, iii. 15-18. He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him, 36. Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life, v. 24. Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, That ye believe on him whom he
