MATT. IX. 12, 13.

And the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote upon his breast, saying, God be merciful to me a sinner, xviii. 11. 13. For I was alive without the law once:

but when the commandment came, sin

revived, and I died. And the commandment, which was ordained to life, I found to be unto death. For sin, taking occasion by the commandment, deceived me, and by it slew me. Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good. Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin. For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I. If then I do that which I would not, I consent unto the law that it is good. Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh), dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. I find then a law, that when I would do good, evil is present with me. For I delight in the law of God after the inward man: But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me intocaptivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death? Rom. vii. 9--24. Because thou sayest, I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked: I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eye-salve, that thou mayest see, Rev. iii. 17, 18.

Πορευθέντος δὲ μάθετε τί ἐστιν· ̓́Ελεον θέλω, καὶ οὐ θυσίαν· οὐ γὰρ ἦλθον καλέσαι δικαίους, ἀλλ ̓ ἁμαρτωλοὺς εἰς μετάνοιαν.

But a go ye and learn what that mean

eth, b I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to d repentance.

a But he said unto them, Have ye not read what David did, when he was an hundred, and they that were with him; Or, have ye not read in the law, how that on the sabbath days the priests in the temple profane the sabbath, and are blameless? But if ye had known what this meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice, ye would not have condemned the guiltless, Matt. xii. 3.5.7. Jesus saith unto them, Did ye never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord's doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes? xxi. 42. But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead, but of the living, xxii. 31, 32. And as touching the dead, that they rise: have ye not read in the book of Moses, how in the bush God spake unto him, saying, I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? Mark xii. 26. He said unto him, What is written in the law? how readest thou? Luke x. 26. Jesus answered them, Is it not written in your law, I said, Ye are gods? John x. 34.

To do justice and judgment is more acceptable to the LORD than sacrifice, Prov. xxi. 3. For I desired mercy, and not sacrifice; and the knowledge of God more than burntofferings, Hos. vi. 6. Wherewith shall I come before the LORD, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old? Will the LORD be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first-born for my transgression, the fruit of my body for the sin of my soul? He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what

doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? Mic. vi.

6-8.

For the Son of man is come to save that which was lost. How think ye? if a man have an hundred sheep, and one of them be gone astray, doth he not leave the ninety and nine, and goeth into the mountains, and seeketh that which is gone astray? And if so be that he find it, verily I say unto you, he rejoiceth more of that sheep, than of the ninety and nine which went not astray, Matt. xviii. 11-13. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance, Luke v. 32. And he spake this parable unto them, saying, What man of you, having an hundred sheep, if he lose one of them, doth not leave the ninety and nine in the wilderness, and go after that which is lost, until he find

it? And when he hath found it, he layeth it on his shoulders, rejoicing.

And when he cometh home, he calleth together his friends and neighbours, saying unto them, Rejoice with me; for I have found my sheep which was lost. I say unto you, that likewise joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth, more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need no repentance. Either what woman having ten pieces of silver, if she lose one piece, doth not light a candle, and sweep the house, and seek diligently till she find it? And when she hath found it, she calleth her friends and her neighbours together, saying, Rejoice with me; for I have found the piece which I had lost. Likewise, I say unto you, There is joy in the presence of the angels of God angels one sinner that repenteth, xv. 3-10. For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost, xix. 10. As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one, Rom. iii. 10. Know ye not that the unrighteous shall not inherit the kingdom of God? Be not deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor abusers of themselves with mankind, Nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners, shall inherit the kingdom of God. And such were some

sanctified, but ye are justified in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God, 1 Cor. vi. 9-11. Who was before a blasphemer, and a persecutor, and injurious: but I obtained mercy, because I did it ignorantly in unbelief. And the grace of our Lord was exceeding abundant with faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief. Howbeit for this cause I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might shew forth all long-suffering, for a pattern to them which should hereafter believe on him to life everlasting, 1 Tim. i. 13-16.

VER. 14.

Τότε προσέρχονται αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταὶ 'Ἰωάννου, λέγοντες· Διατί ἡμεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι νηστεύομεν πολλὰ, οἱ δὲ μαθηταί

σου οὐ νηστεύουσι ;

Then came to him a the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not ?

a Now when John had heard in the prison the works of Christ, he sent two of his disciples, Matt. xi. 2. Then there arose a question, between some of John's disciples and the Jews about purifying, John iii. 25. When therefore the Lord knew how the Pharisees had heard that Jesus made and baptized more disciples than John, iv. 1.

b Moreover, when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward, Matt. vi. 16. For John came neither eating nor drinking, and they say, He hath a devil. The Son of man came eating and drinking, and they say, Behold a man gluttonous, and a winebibber, a friend of publicans and sinners. But wisdom is justified of her children, xi. 18, 19. And the disciples of John and of the Pharisees used to fast: and they come and say unto him, Why do the disciples of John and of the Pharisees fast, but thy disciples fast not? And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bride

groom is with them? as long as they have the bridegroom with them, they cannot fast. But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days. No man also seweth a piece of new cloth on an old garment: else the new piece that filled it up taketh away from the old, and the rent is made worst. And no man putteth new wine into oldottles: else the new wine doth burst the bottles, and the wine is spilled, and te bottles will be marred: but new wine must be put into new bottles, Mark ii. 18-22. And he spake this parable unto certain which trusted in themselves that they were righteous,

and despised others: Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a Publican. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this Publican. I fast twice in the week, I give tithes of all that I possess, Luke xviii. 9-12.

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Μὴ δύνανται εἱ υἱοὶ τοῦ νυμφῶνος πενθεῖν, ἐφ ̓ ὅσον μετ ̓ αὐτῶν ἐστιν ὁ νυμφίος; ἐλεύσονται δὲ ἡμέραι ὅταν ἀπαρθῇ ἀπ ̓ αὐτῶν ὁ νυμφίος,

καὶ τότε νηστεύσουσιν.

And Jesus said unto them, Can the children of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken from them, and then shall they fast.

* Then shall the kingdom of heaven be likened unto ten virgins, which took their lamps, and went forth to meet the bridegroom. And five of them were wise, and five were foolish. They that were foolish took their lamps, and took no oil with them: But the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. While the bridegroom tarried, they all slumbered and slept. And at midnight there was a cry made, Behold, the bridegroom cometh; go ye out to meet him. Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps. And the foolish said unto the wise, Give us of your oil; for our lamps are gone out. But the wise answered, saying, Not 80; lest there be not enough for us VOL. 1.

and you: but go ye rather to them that sell, and buy for yourselves. And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came; and they that were ready went in with him to the marriage: and the door was shut, Matt. xxv. 1-10. She shall be brought unto the king in raiment of needlework: the virgins her companions that follow her shall be brought unto thee. With gladness and rejoicing shall they be brought: they shall enter into the king's palace, Ps. xlv. 14, 15. He that hath the bride is the bridegroom: but the friend of the bridegroom, which standeth and heareth him, rejoiced greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. This my joy fore is fulfilled, John iii. 29. And he saith unto me, Write, Blessed are they which are called unto the marriagesupper of the Lamb. And he saith unto me, These are the true sayings of God, Rev. xix. 9. And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband, xxi. 2.

b And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs. And they which had happened. And it came to talked together of all these things pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him. And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad? And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering, said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days? And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people: And how the Chief Priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him. But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to-day is the third day since these things were done, Luke xxiv. 13-21.

MATT. IX. 15-18.

But because I have said these things | unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart, John xvi. 6. Verily, verily, I say unto you, That ye shall weep and lament, but the world shall rejoice: and ye shall be sorrowful, but your sorrow shall be turned into joy. A woman when she is in travail hath

sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world. And yenow therefore have sorrow: but I will see you again, and your heart shall rejoice, and your joy no man taketh from you 20-22. And when he had spoke these things, while they beheld, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they looked steadfastly toward heaven as he went up, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel, Acts i. 9,10.

• Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers: as Barnabas, and Simeon | that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul. As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. And when they had fasted and

prayed, and laid their hands on them,

they sent them away, Acts xiii. 1-3. And when they had ordained them elders in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord, on whom they believed, xiv. 23. In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness, 2 Cor. xi. 27.

VER. 16.

Οὐδεὶς δὲ ἐπιβάλλει ἐπίβλημα ῥάκους ἀγνάφου ἐπὶ ἱματίῳ παλαιῷ· αἴρει γὰς τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτοῦ ἀτὸ τοῦ ἱματίου, καὶ χεῖρον σχίσμα γίνεται.

No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment: a for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.

* Let my Lord, I pray thee, pass over before his servant: and I will lead on softly, according as the cattle that goeth before me and the children be able to endure, until I come unto

my lord unto Seir, Gen. xxxiii.14. For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity, Ps.cxxv. 3. He shall feed his flock like a shepherd: he shall gather the lambs with hisarm, and carry them in his bosom, and shall gently lead those that are with young, Is. xl. 11. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now, John xvi. 12. I have fed you with milk, and not with meat: for hitherto ye were not able to bear it, neither yet now are ye able. For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? 1 Cor. iii. 2, 3.

VER. 17.

Οὐδὲ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς παλαιούς· εἰ δὲ μήγε, ῥήγνυνται οἱ ἀσκοὶ, καὶ ὁ οἶνος ἐκχεῖται, καὶ οἱ ἀσκοὶ ἀπολοῦνται· ἀλλὰ βάλλουσιν οἶνον νέον εἰς ἀσκοὺς καινοὺς, καὶ ἀμφότερα συντηροῦνται.

Neither do men put new wine into a old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

a They did work wilily, and went and made as if they had been ambassadors, and took old sacks upon their asses, and wine bottles, old, and rent, and bound up, Josh. ix. 4.

Ταῦτα αὐτοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτοῖς, ἰδοὺ, ἄρχων ἐλθὼν προσεκύνει αὐτῷ, λέγων· Ὅτι ἡ θυγάτης μου ἄρτι ἑτελεύτησεν· ἀλ λὰ ἐλθὼν ἐπίθες τὴν χεῖρά σου ἐπ ̓ αὐτὴν, καὶ ζήσεται.

While he spake these things unto them, a behold, there came a certain ruler, and b worshipped him, saying, My daughter is even now dead: but come and lay thy hand upon her, and she shall live.

a And, behold, there cometh one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name; and when he saw him, he fell at his feet, Mark v. 22. And, behold, there came a man named Jairus, and he was a ruler of the synagogue: and he fell down at Jesus' feet, and besought him that he would come into his house, Luke viii. 41. While he yet spake, there cometh one from the

ruler of the synagogue's house, saying to him, Thy daughter is dead; trouble not the Master, 49. And after the reading of the Law and the Pro

phets the rulers of the synagogue sent unto them, saying, Ye men and brethren, if ye have any word of ex. hortation for the people, say on, Acts xiii. 15.

• The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed. For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it, Matt. viii. 8, 9. But Naaman was wroth, and went away, and said, Behold, I thought, He will surely come out to me, and stand, and call on the name of the LORD his God, and strike his hand over the place, and recover the leper, 2 Kings v. 11. Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died, John xi. 21. VER. 19.

Καὶ ἐγερθεὶς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἠκολούθησεν αὐτῷ And Jesus arose, and followed him, and so did his disciples.

καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

• And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him, Matt. viii. 7. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench, till he send forth judgment unto victory, xii. 20. Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work, John iv. 34. How God anointed Jesus of Na

VER. 20.

προσελθοῦσα ὄπισθεν, ἥψατο τοῦ κρασ(Καὶ ἰδοὺ, γυνὴ αἰμοῤῥοοῦσα δώδεκα ἔτη,

πέδου τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ.

And, a behold, a woman, which was diseased with ban issue of blood twelve years, came behind him, and touched the hem of his garment:

a And a certain woman, which had an issue of blood twelve years, Mark v. 25. And a woman having an issue of blood twelve years, which had spent all her living upon physi cians, neither could be healed of any, Luke viii. 43.

b And if a woman have an issue of her blood many days out of the time of her separation, or if it run beyond the time of her separation; all the days of the issue of her uncleanness shall be as the days of her separation: she shall be unclean, Lev. xv. 25.

• And besought him that they might only touch the hem of his garment: and as many as touched were made perfectly whole, Matt. xiv. 36. For she said, If I may touch but his clothes, I shall be whole, Mark v. 28. And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made

whole, vi. 56. Came behind him, and touched the border of his garment: and immediately her issue of blood stanched, Luke viii. 44.

VER. 21.

Ἔλεγε γὰρ ἐν ἑαυτῆ· Ἐὰν μόνον ἅψωμαι τοῦ ἱματίου αὐτοῦ, σωθήσομαι.

For she said within herself, If I may but touch his garment, I shall be whole.

VER. 22.

Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἐπιστραφεὶς, καὶ ἰδὼν αὐτὴν, εἶπε· Θάρσει θύγατερ· ἡ πίστις σου σέσωκέ σε. Καὶ ἐσώθη ἡ γυνὴ ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας ἐκείνης.)

But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, a Daughter, be

of good comfort; thy faith hath made

thee whole. And the woman was made

whole from that hour.
