PIPER, 23, PATERNOSTER ROW. 1849-50. ADVERTISEMENT. It is now ten years since it was suggested to the Editors that a work on the plan of "THE CHEMIST" was much wanted. That very numerous body-the drug trade-then possessed no journal: no periodical ever espoused its cause in any case in which the advocacy of a journalist might have been useful. At that very period the interests of this large and respectable body were assailed in all the medical Bills laid before the House of Commons; in fact, the very exercise of their calling was in great danger of being annihilated by the provisions of those Bills. They were, for the most part, men whose knowledge was far from adequate to the fulfilment of the serious duties of their vocation; the older members were druggists, not chemists; but among the rising generation were many pleasing examples of young men who had determined to make scientific knowledge the basis of their professional advancement. At the present time, dispensing chemists may be regarded as one of the most scientific classes of the community. Perhaps it is not too much to say that-in bringing out a journal of chemistry, both scientific and applied to pharmacy and the arts-we contributed very considerably to this improved condition of the pharmaceutical body at any rate, we came forward at a most desirable juncture, and to ourselves belongs the merit of having been the first laborers in the field-since occupied, for a time, conjointly with ourselves-for a time, without us-by others. "THE CHEMIST" was the first periodical exclusively devoted to chemistry ever published in this country. The new series of "THE CHEMIST" will differ little, if at all, from the original publication. The plan will be the same, but the execution of it will be better, and, perhaps, a wider range of topics will be embraced. As heretofore, it will be divided into four departments-"Chemistry," "Chemical Manufactures and Agricultural Chemistry," Pharmacy," and "Reviews." In the department of " Chemistry" will be given all the discoveries in chemistry made during the month, and translations of all the chemical papers in all the foreign scientific journals up to within three or four days of publication. In "Chemical Manufactures and Agricultural Chemistry" will be given descriptions of all new processes discovered all over the world within the period of publication, and specifications of all strictly chemical patents. We shall also give analyses of plants, soils, manures, &c., and everything of interest to the manufacturer and to the farmer. Under the head of "Pharmacy, Materia Medica, Therapeutics, &c.," will be given all new processes of manufacturing drugs, every addition made to our pharmacology, and papers on the action of new remedial agents. In fact, "THE CHEMIST" will contain everything published at home and abroad, which can interest the scientific, manufacturing, or pharmaceutical chemist-the physician-the B |
