The Soldiers having thus feiz'd on Jefus, led him away firft to the house of Annas, who was Father in Law to Caiaphas the High Prieft for that Year. Now this Caiaphas was he who in the Sanhedrim, when they had the debate concerning Jefus, gave his Cpinion thas it was neceffary that one Man fhould dy for the whole People; wh ch was truer than he imagin'd, as we have already faid. Annas order d him to be carried before the High Prieit, where many of the Sanbedrim wire affembled.

Peter being got in, fat himfelf down by the fire in the Hall with the Priefts Servants, to obferve the iffue of the Bufinefs. While he was there, the Woman that let him in, looking fted faftly upon him, ask'd him whether he were not one of the Difciples of Jefus of Nazareth. while after he went out of the Hall into the Porch, and the Cock crew. About an hour after another Servant of the High Prieft, related to him whofe Ear Peter had cut off, affirm'd he had feen him together with Jefus in the Garden of Gethsemane, the reft faying it was not unlikely that he was one of his Followers, fince by his Language they might perceive he was a Galilean. 19 The high priest then asked Jefus of his difciples, and of his doctrine.

20 Jefus anfwered him, Ifpake openly to the world ; .I ever taught in the fynagogue, and in the temple, whither the Jews always refort, and in fecret have I faid nothing.

Jefus then, who was at that time in the Hall, turning to him, with a filent look upbraided him with the crime he had committed with which Peter was fo fenfibly affected, that remembring the Admonition of Jefus wherein he had forewarn'd him that before the Cock crow'd twice he should thrice deny him, he went out of the Hall, fill'd with Grief and Anguish, and with a flood of Tears lamented the Fault he had committed.

Jefus afterwards being fent for into the Room where the High Prieft was feated with feveral Members of the Sanhedrim, was by Caiaphas examin'd concerning his Difciples and his Doctrine. To whom he thus replied: I have at no time taught in fecret, but have openly deliver'd my Doctrin in almost all the Synagogues of Judea, and in the Temple it felf, where there is always a great refort of

21 Why askeft thou me? ask them which heard me, what I have faid unto them: behold, they know what I faid.

22 And when he had thus fpoken, one of the officers which ftood by, ftroke Jefus with the palm of his hand, faying, Answereft thou the high priest fo?

23 Jefus answered him, If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil: but if well, why smiteft thou me?

People. There is then no reafon why you should examin me concerning my Doctrin, fince you may be inform'd of it by thofe who heard me. Upon this one of the Officers that stood by, ftruck him for not speaking reverently, as he pretended, to the High Priest. To whom Jefus : If I have fpoken amifs, how wherein; if not, why doft thou ftrike me undefervedly?

Now the Chief Priefts and whole Affembly were at a lofs for witness against him: for tho many were ready to teftify against him, yet their depofitions were not fufficient to prove him guilty of any capital crime. At laft there appear'd two
