Recent demographic trends of population ageing present a series of challenges for the financing of national social security and health care policies for older citizens, due to the growing difference in the size of the economically active population compared to the number of people over retirement age. This book considers the trends and approaches adopted by member states of the Council of Europe to address the issue of financing old-age pension and social health-care programmes during the 1990's, and some examples are also provided from Canada and Australia.
