TIMELY WARNINGS AND WHOLESOME PRECEPTS

Sol enters Libra this year on the 23d of September, at 42 min. past 8 in the morning, when 29 degrees of Libra ascend, and on the mid-heaven, is the 9th of Leo. Venus, still besieged by the two evil planets, rules the ascendant, yet is much further afflicted by her application to a conjunction with Mars, while sextile to Saturn. Jupiter and Venus, it is true, are both in the south angle, closely besieging Mars; but good never results from such conflicting positions. Conjuncti is of Sol and Mercury in Virgo, and of Venus and Mars in Leo--Sextiles of Saturn and Mars, and of Saturn and Venus, both from Gemini and Leo-Quartiles of Sol and Saturn, and of Mercury and Saturn, both from Virgo and Gemini, with an Occultation of Cor Leonis, by Venus, and conjunctions of the Moon with Saturn, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury, are the additional influences, whose effects are to be summed. We bilk ourselves by saying TIME demolisheth

The ways and customs good that VICE abolisheth. By borrowing a word or two from the royal moralist of Israel, a forcible application may be made to the present state of things. "They would none of my counsel," says the divine oracle; "they despised my reproof; therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices. But the turning away of the pure from them shall slay them; and the prosperity of fools shall destroy them."

Poetical Vagary-continued.

First then-in detail not to be too curious-
The progeny o' the great, I merely say,
Whether legitimately born, or spurious,
upon the family-entail must not prey:
And hence, a leading point in the invention
Has been to get them all provided for-

Each brat must have some plea to claim a pension→
Thus up is kick'd some just and needful war!

The field of lucre, as truth tells the story,
Is oft mistaken for the field of glory.

TIMELY WARNINGS AND WHOLESOME PRECEPTS. The celestial Index held out this Month to our contemplation, contains Conjunctions of Jupiter and Venus, and of Jupiter and Mars, both in VirgoQuartiles of both the Sun and Mercury with the Planet Geor. Sidus from Libra and Capricorn; and of Saturn and Venus from Gemini and Virgo Trines of both Venus and Mars with Geor. Sidus from Virgo and Capricorn; and of Saturn and Mercury from Gemini and Libra-and an Occultation of Saturn by the Moon, the former being all the month retrograde.

With sceptres twain some bear down disaffection

THIS keeps the men—THAT, women in subjection.

On a slight view, rather good than evil might seem to be imported: but traversing the figure for Autumn, and weighing the counterbalance of vicious influence, one moderately versed in the subject must see that, in spite of Trines and Conjunctions, evil predominates. From the general complexion of the signs, gambling-criminal voluptuousness-and those horrible sensual vices which are ratting the sills of moral virtue, are as prevalent as ever. One of some distinction as to family, crossed, as it seems, in no very honour. able speculations, falls a premature example of depravity. Much perplexity appears to result from a failure of some money-monger, in Paris, at this time.

Poetical Vagary—continued.

But if not politic to pick a quarrel,

Some other ways and means adopted are,
Said to be set ou foot to make us moral-
Namely the high-church pulpit, and the bar?
State-wardens are increased-and for affording
Vast hordes of lawyers to grow fat by laws,
The laws must needs be multiplied according-
And as they 're multiplied be filled with flaws!
Doubtful the sense must be of each expression
In every act-or starve would the profession!

TIMELY WARNINGS AND WHOLESOME PRECEPTS. First among the November signs, we have to notice the Conjunction of Sol and Mercury in Scorpio-then, the Quartiles of Saturn and Mars from Gemini and Virgo; of Venus and Georgium Sidus from Libra and Capricorn; of Jupiter and Mercury from Virgo and Sagittarius-the Trine of Saturn and Venus from Gemini and Libra-and an Opposition of Saturn and Mercury from Gemini and Sagittarius. These, with a second Occultation of Saturn by the Moon in Gemini-an Eclipse of the Moon in the same sign-and the sequence of Lunar Aspects, make up the omens of the Month.

England had patriots, many once, and true ones,

Whose good old ways are chang'd for sorry new ones.

The hostile planets, Saturn and Mars, in perforining their diurnal revolutions, will, for some time, affect our cause in the East. While Saturn, whose declination North is now equal to the latitude of the capital of Birman, is traversing the meridians of England from East to West, Mars will be crossing those of our Birman enemy. Saturn is favourable to Indian States; and seated as he is in the ascendant of London, where he is retrograde, makes much against us. Mercury is also disposed to be friendly to Asia; and his quartile with Jupiter is annoying to us. Spain is still conspicuously signified as undergoing changes; but whether good will result is doubtful. Many signs, at the present season, seem to favour the popular cause: and it appears that the throne of Naples and Sicily is to become a reversion.

Poetical Vagary—continued.

State-patronage is dealt at large, observe you,
On certain terms by placemen snugly in-
That is to say-if you'll serve me I'll serve you;
And stick to you like wax, through thick and thin!
Courts, too, are paths to power of strange dimension;
While you, in church-preferment, cannot go
Beyond a certain circumscrib'd extension,
Too narrow for the purpose found; and so,
If rightly I infer from my researches,
This the grand reason is for building churches!
