Let us therefore fear, lest a promise being left us of entering into his rest, any of you should seem to come short of it, &c. Lest any man fall, &c.-Heb. iv. 1. 11. ii. 1, 2. Pass the time of your sojourning here in fear, &c.-1 Pet. i. 17.

The end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober and watch unto prayer.-1 Pet. iv. 7.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.--1 Pet. v. 8.

Seeing ye know before, beware lest ye also being led away with the error of the wicked, fall from your own stedfastness.-2 Pet. iii. 17. 1 Thess. iii. 5. James v. 19.

Owe no man any thing: but to love one another; for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law, &c. It is briefly comprehended in this saying, namely, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. Love worketh no ill to his neighbour.-Rom. xiii. 8-10. Gal. v. 13, 14.

Behold, I come as a thief: blessed is he that watcheth, and keepeth his garments, lest he walk naked, and they see his shame.-Rev. xvi. 15.

Love edifieth.-1 Cor. viii. 1. Though I speak with the tongues of men or angels, &c. have the gift of prophecy, &c. have all faith, &c. Bestow all my goods to feed the poor; and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing: charity suffereth long, &c. charity never faileth, &c.-1 Cor. xiii. 1-8. 13.

Follow after charity.-1 Cor. xiv. 1. Let all your things be done with charity.-1 Cor. xvi. 14.

There is neither Jew nor Greek, &c. for ye are all one in Christ Jesus. -Gal. iii. 28.

By love serve one another: for all the law is-fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, &c. but the fruit of the Spirit is love, &c.-Gal. v. 13,

I pray that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge, &c. -Phil. i. 9.

Having the same love, &c. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Phil. ii. 2-4. 1 Cor, viii. 1. Gal, v. 13.

We give thanks, &c. since we heard, &c. of the love which ye have to all the saints.-Col.i. 3,4. Eph. i. 15.

That their hearts might be comforted, being knit together in love.Col. ii. 2,

Above all these things, put on charity, which is the bond of perfectness, Col. iii. 14.

He that saith he is in the light, and hateth his brother, is in darkness even until now he that loveth his brother, abideth in the light.—1 John ii. 9-11.

Is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother: for this is the message that ye heard from the beginning, That we should love one another, &c. We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren, &c. We ought to lay down our lives for the brethren : let us not love in word, neither in tongue, but in deed and in truth. This is his commandment, That we should, &c. love one another.-1 John. iii. 10, 11. 14. 16. 18, 19, 23.

Let us love one another; for love is of God, and every one that loveth, is born of God, and knoweth God. He that loveth not, knoweth not God, for God is love, &c. If God so loved us, we ought also to love one another, &c. If any man say he loveth God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar, &c. This commandment we have from him, That he who loveth God, love his brother also.—1 John iv. 7, 8. 11. 20, 21. 2 John 5. Levit. xix. 17, 18.

I have somewhat against thee, that thou hast left thy first love.-Rev. ii. 4.

SECT. 11. We should sympathise with

each other in Pity and Compassion; help and comfort one another, and bear one another's Burdens. THE children of Israel, when they had in battle cut off the Benjamites (bemoaned them), they lift up their voices and wept sore; and said, O Lord God of Israel, why is this come to pass in Israel, that there should be to day one tribe lacking in Israel? &c. and it repented them for Benjamin their brother; and they said, There is one tribe cut off from Israel this day; how shall we do for wives for them? &c. Judges xxi. 1-3. 6, 7. 12-16.

With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful.-2 Sam. xxii. 26. Ps. xviii. 25. Prov. xi. 17.

Thus speaketh the Lord of hosts, &c. Shew mercy and compassion every man to his brother, and oppress not the widow.-Zech. vii. 9, 10.

Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.-Matt. v. 7.

Come ye blessed, &c. I was an hungered, and ye gave me meat; was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me, &c. Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.-Matt. xxv. 34-40.

Whosoever shall give you a cup of cold water, &c. because ye belong to Christ, &c. he shall not lose his reward.-Mark ix. 41.

In the parable of the man who fell among the thieves: one looked upon the wounded man, and another did so: but a certain Samaritan saw him, had compassion on him, bound up his wounds, &c.. He that shewed mercy was his neighbour. Go and do thou likewise.-Luke x. 30—37.

I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.Luke xxii. 32.

Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep. Be of the same mind one toward another.-Rom. xii. 15, 16.

We then that are strong, ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please ourselves. Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification.-Rom. xv. 1, 2. 1 Cor. viii. 1.

Blessed be God, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort, who comforteth us, &c. that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.— 2 Cor. i. 3, 4.

Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?— 2 Cor. xi. 29.

Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.-Gal. vi. 2.

We are members one of another, &c. Be ye kind one to another, tender-hearted.-Eph. iv. 25. 32.

Put on therefore (as the elect of God, holy and beloved) bowels of mercies, kindness, &c.-Col. iii. 12.

Remembering without ceasing, &c. your labour of love.-1 Thess. i. 3.

Comfort the feebleminded, support the weak.-1 Thess. v. 14. iv. 18.

If she have washed the saints' feet, if she have relieved the afflicted, &c. -1 Tim. v. 10.

Ye endured a great fight of afflictions, &c. by reproaches and afflictions, and partly whilst ye became companions of them that were so used: for ye had compassion of me in my bonds.-Heb. x. 32-34.

Be not forgetful to entertain strangers, for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. Remember them that are in bonds, as bound with them; and them which suffer adversity, as being yourselves also in the body.-Heb. xiii. 2, 3.

Pure religion, &c. is this, to visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction.-James i. 27.
