APPENDIX.

274, Evening.

"The LORD shall be thine everlasting Light."

THE

radiant morn

hath passed away,

And spent too soon her golden store;
The shadows of departing day

Creep on once more.

2. Our life is but a fading dawn,

Its glorious noon how quickly past;
Lead us, O CHRIST, when all is gone,
Safe home at last.

3. Oh, by Thy soul-inspiring grace
Uplift our hearts to realms on high;
Help us to look to that bright place
Beyond the sky;

4. Where light, and love, and joy, and peace
In undivided empire reign,

And thronging angels never cease

Their deathless strain

;

5. Where saints are clothed in spotless white,
And evening shadows never fall,

Where Thou, Eternal Light of Light,
Art LORD of all.

Amen.

275.

"It is Thou, LORD, only that makest me dwell in safety."

1.

THE day

I

[blocks in formation]

All thanks, O LORD, to Thee;

pray

Thee now that sinless
The hours of dark may be

O JESU, keep me in Thy sight,

And guard me through the coming night.

2. The joys of day are over;
I lift my heart to Thee,
And ask Thee that offenceless
The hours of dark may be:

O JESU, keep me in Thy sight,
And guard me through the coming night,

3. The toils of day are over;

I raise the hymn to Thee,
And ask that free from peril

may

The hours of dark
O JESU, keep me in Thy sight,

be:

And guard me through the coming night.

4. Lighten mine eyes, O SAVIOUR,
Or sleep in death shall I,
And he, my wakeful tempter,
Triumphantly shall cry

"Against him I have now, prevailed;

Rejoice! the child of God has failed."

5. Be Thou my soul's preserver,
For Thou alone dost know
How many are the perils

Through which I have to go:

O loving JESU, hear my call,

And guard and save me from them all.

276.

Amen.

"And at even, when the sun did set, they brought unto Him all that were diseased, and all that were possessed with devils. And all the city was gathered together at the door."

1.

T even ere the sun was set,

AT

The sick, O LORD, around Thee lay;
Oh, in what divers pains they met !
Oh, with what joy they went away!
2. Once more 'tis eventide, and we
Oppressed with various ills draw near:
What if Thy form we cannot see?
We know and feel that Thou art here.
3. O SAVIOUR CHRIST, our woes dispel;
For some are sick, and some are sad,
And some have never loved Thee well,
And some have lost the love they had;

4. And some have found the world is vain,
Yet from the world they break not free;
And some have friends who give them pain,
Yet have not sought a friend in Thee;

1.

5. And none, O LORD, have perfect rest,
For none are wholly free from sin;
And they, who fain would serve Thee best,
Are conscious most of wrong within.
6. O SAVIOUR CHRIST, Thou too art Man;
Thou hast been troubled, tempted, tried;
Thy kind but searching glance can scan
wounds that shame would hide;

The

very

7. Thy touch has still its ancient power;
No word from Thee can fruitless fall;
Hear in this solemn evening hour,
And in Thy mercy heal us all.

277.

Amen.

"GOD, even our own GoD, shall give us His blessing." FATHER, Who didst all things make

That heaven and earth might do Thy will,

Bless us this night for JEsu's sake,
And for Thy work preserve us still.

2. O SON, Who didst redeem mankind,
And set the captive sinner free,
Keep us this night with peaceful mind,
That we may safe abide in Thee.

3. O HOLY GHOST, Who by Thy power
The Church elect dost sanctify,
Seal us this night, and hour by hour
Our hearts and members purify.

4. TO FATHER, SON, and HOLY GHOST,
The GOD Whom heaven and earth adore,
From men and from the angel-host

1.

1.

Be praise and glory evermore.

278.

"The True Light."

Amen.

HAIL, gladdening Light, of His pure glory

poured

Who is the Immortal FATHER, Heavenly, Blest, Holiest of Holies, JESU CHRIST, our Lord. 2. Now we are come to the sun's hour of rest, The lights of evening round us shine, We hymn the FATHER, SON, and HOLY SPIRIT Divine.

3. Worthiest art Thou at all times to be sung With undefiled tongue,

SON of our GOD, Giver of life, Alone; Therefore in all the world Thy glories, LORD, they own. Amen.

279.

AT END OF SERVICE.

"The LORD shall give His people the blessing of peace."

SAVIOUR, again to Thy dear Name we raise With one accord our parting hymn of praise; We stand to bless Thee ere our worship cease, Then, lowly kneeling, wait Thy word of peace.
