mysterious law which links all truth in an indissoluble chain, we may rest assured, that moral Truth is quite as infallible in its results as that of Science; and that, in grasping and adhering to a few simple rules, we may obtain a sure guide to peace of mind,—that problem which it most concerns us to work out.

It is not from mere notion, but from a measure of experience, that this is received as a fact by the compiler of this work. The contents of it are arranged in the form of a diary, in order that but small portions of it should be read at one time. For not only is the continuous

perusal of short axiomatic sentences very wearisome, but it is also very unprofitable. Truth is the manna of the soul, provided by our Wise Father to sustain us in the wilderness, and is most salutary when taken in small portions, as the material food was ordered to be gathered. Too often, indeed, and too generally, the cry of the natural heart is now, as it was then, "our soul loatheth this light bread;"* but we may venture to hope, that here and there some thoughtful minds are to be found, whose spiritual appetite desires and seeks its proper and appointed provender.

In most instances, the names of the authors of the extracts are given. In a few, they are withheld. This, I imagine to be of no importance with the readers of such a book as this, who, as inquirers after Truth, are not likely to be governed by names, but by natures, in what is offered to their notice.

"There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding."— Job xxxii. 8.

So powerful is virtue, and so glorious is Providence, that every man has a light set up within him, for a guide, which we do all of us see and acknowledge, although we do not pursue it.-SENECA.

"Faith is the substance of things hoped for; the evidence of things not seen.”—Heb. i. 1.

It is a man's duty to believe of the Deity that it is; and that it is in such a manner to mankind, that it overlooks them, and neglects them not.-PYTHAGORAS.
