KING-STANLEY-continued.

dignity. The Rector wishes to leave on record his opinion, that it will be better to let the tops grow up and form spiral heads, and not to cut them into knop-headed forms, like those in Painswick Churchyard. They will however have to be cut symmetrically at the bottom and sides, to produce that Cypress form known to travellers abroad, as one of the most impressive features of graveyards. Cypress trees are not all of them sufficiently hardy to be cultivated out of doors in England for any ornamental purpose; it is on this account that the yew-tree has to take its place, and submit to the knife of the gardener in order to assume the Cypress form. The spire of the Church as well as the natural spire of treegrowth is accepted as the symbol of The Resurrection. Here is an instance of the teaching of external forms, which thoughtful minds recognise and delight in, and which will grow with education in this land, and gradually disperse the prejudice against external symbolism in religious observance, which has had such unfair sway owing to the little cultivation of the faculty of imagination in practical England.

The congregation attending Evening Service has always felt the inconvenience of the darkness at the entrance of the Churchyard, produced by the neighbouring wall and over-hanging trees; this has been remedied by Mr. W. H. Marling, who has considerately placed a gas lamp at the angle, the light of which commands the crossing and the entrance.

The first day of Lent, commonly called Ash-Wednesday, falls this year on the 6th of March. During this season the same course will be observed as in previous years. On Wednesdays and Fridays, Mattins will be at 11 instead of 8, and there will be Evensong on Fridays at 4. On Wednesday evenings there will be the penitential Service, consisting of (1) a Hymn, (2) the Miserere sung kneeling, (3) Sermon, (4) the Litany of Penitence. In Passion and Holy Weeks "The Story of the Cross" by the Rev. E. Munro will be sung, instead of the Litany of Penitence.

An oaken memorial cross has been put at the head of the grave of Alfred Edward Workman, whose death, at the age of 18 years, after an illness of only four days, caused great grief amongst his school-fellows. Mainly by their contributions, 32 in number, the cost has been paid. The sympathy, strongly felt in such instances, very rarely receives expression owing to the difficulty attending the character and expense of the memorial. In future it is hoped that what has been done in this instance, will give encouragement to those who may desire to place a memorial at the graves of their friends or relatives. The Cross is an exact copy of others already erected; it was made by Mr. James Davis, and the cost has been 18/6. It may be stated that it is quite possible to have wooden memorial Crosses at less expense; but if less solid, it must be borne in mind that they cannot last long. Still a memorial for a generation is a true comfort, and quite enough perhaps to satisfy the affectionate sympathies of one generation, particularly in the case of the devoted who desire more to see the symbol of Christian hope at the graves of the faithful departed, than a memorial ambitious of speaking to future unconcerned generations.

A whole holiday was given to the school-children on Feb. 1st. The schoolroom was on the afternoon of that day monopolized by the grown-up female population of the parish. Miss Cooper had invited them to a dinner, and her invitations were gladly accepted by all who could, and dinner was sent to those who could not, be present. Among the visitors whose presence was welcomed on the occasion were the Rev. R. Cooper and Mr. Edwd. Wallington. After dinner Sir George Prevost thanked Mr. and Miss Cooper on behalf of the guests for their great kindness. Several toasts were given, and songs and rounds sung for the amusement of the party. This is the second dinner Miss Constance Cooper has given the women in the last three years, and no doubt they will be ready for a third should the same kind lady some day prepare another for them.

The Temperance Club numbers 23 members at present; it is limited to the number of 30.

The Government Inspection of the School took place on February 22nd. H.M. Inspector Mr. Woodd was prevented from coming, and the inspection of the needlework has therefore been postponed for a short time. Eighty-four children were presented for examination. We hope that by next month a satisfactory report will have been received by the managers.

The Night School was held for the last time on Thursday, February 7th. The members attending had dropped off, and those who still attended came less punctually than they had done. fault however had to be found on either of these scores at a supper at the Vicarage to which all the night school, with one exception, came on the night of February 21st.

The Vicar desires to call the attention of the parishioners to the

diminution of the balance in hand; as, unless some effort be made in the dayschool to check it, it will become a balance overdrawn. It is to be hoped "account" that the Government Grant may be considerably larger this year,

but the principal part of it must be paid over to the teachers.

All young persons of a fit age and older persons desirous of receiving the blessing of Confirmation, should apply to the Clergy of the Parish as soon as possible. The Lord Bishop of the Diocese will hold a Confirmation at Dursley on April 16th, the Tuesday in Holy Week.

During Lent there will be on each Friday, excepting in the first week, an Evening Service with a Sermon at 7.30.
