Question 8: What are the FY 1986 and FY 1987 levels of funding provided by the Energy Science Advanced Computation program for the Class V computer system at Argonne National Laboratory? Answer: The Basic Energy Sciences program is considered by the DOE to be the landlord program for the Argonne National Laboratory. As such, the decision was made to include in the Basic Energy Sciences Applied Mathematic Subprogram the request for the Class V computer system, as this system will be used to benefit all programs at the laboratory. While no funds are specifically included for the system, the DOE procedures require that all major items of equipment be identified in the budget request. Funding for the Class V computer system will be derived from all programs based on their use of the system. Question 9: How much funding is being provided for the Continental Scientific Drilling program in FY 1986 and FY 1987 by (a) the Geosciences subprogram, and (b) all of DOE? Answer: The estimated obligations for the Continental Scientific Drilling program in FY 1986 and FY 1987 are (a) $4.4 and 5.0 million, respectively, for the BES Geosciences subprogram, and (b) an additional $1.0 and $1.3 million, respectively, from the Geothermal Program of DOE. Question 10: What types of instrumentation are being supported by the DOE's University Research Instrumentation program in FY 1986, and what types are expected to be supported in FY 1987?
