UNACCENTED SYLLABLES.

In pronouncing a word of more than one syllable, a particular stress of the voice is laid upon one of the syllables, as lite, in the word impolite; this is the accented syllable; the others, of course, are the unaccented syllables.

"Those who wish to pronounce elegantly," as Walker has justly said, "must give particular attention to these syllables, as a neat pronunciation of these forms one of the greatest beauties of speaking." But great defects are common in this respect, not only in the humbler grades of society, but among the educated and refined. In the pulpit, at the bar, in the halls of legislation, everywhere, indeed, this is more or less the case. The defects alluded to consist, chiefly, in the omitting, changing, or obscuring of certain vowel Bounds, or of dropping or adding final consonants. Thus, we have p'lite, hist'ry, trav'l, for polite, history, travel; regēlar, momunt, China, for regular, moment, China; tobaccor for tobacco, mornin' for morning, and many others. Such deformities, except with the most illiterate, are inexcusable.

In the following exercises the letter liable to misusage is printed in italic. When the pupil is practising, require the italic letter to be given QUICKLY or without prolongation, and the accented syllable to be struck with spirit.

In en the following are the only cases which have the e sounded -E den, as pen, chick en, hy phen. jerk en, sud den, kitch en, lin den, mit ten, si ren, slov en, plat en, pat ten, mar ten, lat ten. The termination en is greatly misused; we not unfrequently hear, even from the learned, such distortions as the following-ev un, ris un, strick un, writ tun, heav un.
