INSPIRED be my humble muse
To sing the bless'd Messiah's praise;
To tell to all how worlds began ;

And that 'twas God who first made man!

That ev'ry sorrow we endure,

That ev'ry act and thought impure,
Was caus'd by disobeying God,
By disregarding His bless'd word.

How man on evil was so bent,
That it became his sole intent;

Till God no longer could delay

In mercy, after sent His Son
To die for sin, though He had none,
And whose atoning sacrifice,

"Twixt God and man restored peace.

"Tis these momentous truths my verse Is now intended to rehearse;

Great God, then give me health and grace Thy grand and mighty works to trace!

So make Thy majesty appear,
