Then he reads the short chapter following:

From the Book of the Prophet | the Lord hath said, and in the remnant which the Lord shall call.

Joel and St. Paul's Epistle to the Ephesians.

[blocks in formation]

2 Brethren, through Christ we have access by one Spirit unto the Father. Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellow-citizens with the saints, and of the household of God; and are built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief corner-stone; in whom the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: in whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.

Then he says,

. Greatly to be blessed and praised art Thou, O Lord. Ry. Who art gone up on high, and hast led captivity captive and received gifts for men.

. Thanks be to God.

Ry. Whose mercy is over all His works.

. Praised be the Lord daily.

Ry. Who helpeth us, and poureth His benefits upon us. . Send forth Thy Spirit, O Lord, and our hearts shall be revived.

Ry. And Thou shalt renew the face of the earth.

Then all kneeling, say the Confession and Litany following:

[ocr errors]

ALMIGHTY God, graciously vouchsafe to hear the prayers of us Thine unworthy servants, who confess and bewail the innumerable sins we have most grievously committed against Thee by thought, word, and deed; and send down from heaven the divine light of Thy holy Spirit to purify and enlighten our hearts, and to guide our wandering steps into the ways of truth and peace; for the sake of Thy only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

O God the Father, God the Son, God the Holy Ghost,
Have mercy on us.

[blocks in formation]

O Holy Trinity, three Persons and one God,

Have mercy on us.

From all evil, from all sin, from the spirit of unbelief, from all abuse of this sacred day and of those places which are sacred to Thee, from whatever is an offence to Thee, or a scandal to the weak,

O Lord, deliver us.

From contempt of Thy worship, and all kinds of irreverence in Thy holy presence, from sloth, coldness, and levity in time of prayer, from the neglect of prayer and of Thy sacred word, O Lord, deliver us.

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord; and grant that while we serve Thee with outward decency, we may be likewise careful to adore Thee in spirit and in truth;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

Grant us the spirit of sanctification to purify our hearts, and to banish from thence the spirit of the world and of a disorderly life; the spirit of counsel in all difficulties, of direction in all doubts, of courage in all dangers, and of constancy in all persecutions;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst give us the spirit of wisdom, conduct, and discretion; that in all our conversation we may be able to discern between hypocrisy and truth;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst grant us the spirit of comfort in all trouble, in the times of sickness and in the hour of death, of entire submission to Thy holy will; the spirit of patience and thankfulness under all crosses and afflictions, whether of body or mind;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst grant us the spirit of fear, love, and devotion towards Thee, of stedfast repose of mind in Thy care and providence, of justice and charity towards our neighbours, and of sobriety and abstinence towards ourselves;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

That Thou wouldst give us the spirit of meekness and gentleness towards others, of forgiveness and love towards our enemies; and that Thou wouldst keep us from the evil spirit of pride, gluttony, uncleanness, of envy, anger, covetousness, and sloth; We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

And grant that as Thou hast knit together the differing Gentile nations by the confession of Christ's name, so all they who are born again in the baptismal font may be one both in the belief of their minds and in the piety of their actions; through Christ our Lord;

We beseech Thee to hear us, O Lord.

O Lord, graciously vouchsafe to hear us.

O Son of God, Redeemer of mankind, spare us, we beseech Thee, and have mercy upon us.

Here may be said the Prayer which is to be used when there is Holy Communion (see Sunday Morning Prayers, page 11); and if Whit - Sunday happens to fall on the Feast of St. Barnabas, he here says the special Collect for that Festival (see Saints'-Day Morning Prayers).

Then he says the usual Sunday Morning Thanksgiving Prayer, as follows:

[ocr errors]

ALMIGHTY and everlasting God, who at the beginning of the world didst bless and sanctify the Sabbath-day, in memory of Thy finishing the glorious work of the creation, and who in the new law didst teach the apostles to transfer the duty of it to the Lord's day, in honour of Thy finishing the more glorious work of the redemption and sanctification thereon, by the resurrection of Thy divine Son, and the descent of the Holy Ghost; behold, we thy servants are here on this day assembled to bless and praise Thee for these incomprehensible blessings, and for every other favour Thou hast bestowed upon us, especially for the protection Thou hast afforded us during the week past. Grant, we beseech Thee, that we may sanctify this day, by devoting it entirely to Thy love and service; and that whatever portion of time Thou hast decreed for each of us to live may be dedicated to the glory of Thy name, and employed in faithfully serving Thee; through Jesus Christ our Lord,

Then he says the two Collects and Prayer for a blessing, as in Sunday or Week-day Morning Prayers (see pages 12, 50, 90).

WHIT-SUNDAY.

EVENING PRAYER.

All standing, the head of the family (or the priest or deacon, if present) says:

[ocr errors]

. Turn Thou us, O God our Saviour.

Ry. And let Thine anger cease from us.
. O God, make speed to save us.
Ry. O Lord, make haste to help us.
. Glory be to the Father, &c.

Ry. As it was, &c.

Then he says the following Psalm:

PART OF PSALM 68, v. 4. SING unto God, and sing praises unto His name: magnify Him that rideth upon the heavens, as it were upon an horse; praise Him in His name JAH, and rejoice before Him.

He is a Father of the fatherless, and defendeth the cause of the widows : even God in His holy

habitation.

Thou, O God, sentest a gracious rain upon Thine inheritance: and refreshedst it when it was weary. Thy congregation shall dwell therein for Thou, O God, hast of Thy goodness prepared for the poor.

:

Thou art gone up on high, Thou hast led captivity captive, and received gifts for men: yea, even for Thine enemies, that the Lord God might dwell among them.

Praised be the Lord daily even the God who helpeth us, and poureth His benefits upon us.

He is our God, even the God of whom cometh salvation : God is the Lord, by whom we escape death.

Sing unto God, O ye kingdoms of the earth: O sing praises unto the Lord,

Who sitteth in the heavens over all from the beginning: lo, He doth send out His voice, yea, and that a mighty voice.

Ascribe ye the power to God over Israel His worship and strength is in the clouds.

:

O God, wonderful art Thou in Thy holy places: even the God of Israel; He will give strength and power unto His people; blessed be God.

Then all say,

I BELIEVE in God, &c.

MAY

Then he says,

"AY the reading of the Holy Word (or Holy Gospel) be unto us salvation and protection. Amen.

Then he reads the short chapter following:

From St. Paul's Epistle to the

'BR

Romans.

RETHREN, if the Spirit of Him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, He that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by His Spirit that dwelleth in you. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye

shall live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: and if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with Him, that we may be also glorified together.

Then he says,

. Greatly to be blessed and praised art Thou, O Lord. Ry. Who art gone up on high, and hast led captivity captive, and received gifts for men.
