PREFACE.

It is generally considered as inconsistent with an agreeable and expeditious mode of teaching a Language, to make the pupil read the whole, or even à considerable part of any book, however excellent. The superiority of short but complete and interesting pieces is undeniable, and this consideration has induced me to undertake the present Selection to facilitate the study of the French Language.

I have carefully avoided including any piece involving long or intricate trains of reasoning, which are generally beyond the age of the pupil, while I have selected those calculated to exhibit the language in its purity, and to inculcate good moral principles. Such is the object of this new selection, which, while it offers a series of exercises in accurate reading, in memory, and analysis, is, at the same time, a lesson
