MDCCCLI. 47 Thord. purchase А_ 10,128 733102c PREFACE. The following work was originally written in detached chapters, following each other consecutively, in the Madras Athenæum newspaper. They do not profess to be a complete translation of Dr. Bräuner's work on Demonology; inasmuch as there are many gross anecdotes, and still grosser speculations, which, however they might have been adapted to the taste of the times in which he wrote, would not be tolerated in the present age. A great number of his tales, and a still larger portion of his speculations, have been omitted for this reason; and of those tales which have been introduced, the coarser features have been so softened down that they can hardly be said, in most instances, to retain their original shape. тов |
