PREFACE.

And

THE object of the present publication is to furnish the lovers of choral service with a cheap and portable volume of the Anthems performed in our cathedral and collegiate churches. To avoid, therefore, unnecessary bulk and expense, whatever may be easily found on turning to the Book of Common Prayer, as, for instance, the Collects, and the metrical versions of the Psalms, is omitted. for this reason also, the same words are never repeated, although set to music by different persons; but the names of the composers are subjoined to each Anthem, as nearly as possible in chronological order. And an account of the situations which those composers filled, together with the dates of their deaths, so far as can be ascertained, is prefixed to the work.

At the end is given an alphabetical Table of first lines, with the number of each Anthem, and the name of the composer: by consulting this Index, any required Anthem may be immediately found.

After all, the Editor fears that the work is not what it was to be a complete collection of the Anthems performed in the churches of England and Wales; but he is not the less bound to offer his respectful thanks to those who have aided him with their advice and encouragement in the undertaking and he believes that, by the kind assistance of the several choirs, the work is far more perfect than any of the sort that has ever yet been attempted.
