HONE'S

POOR HUMPHREY.

1829.

By what means God the universe does sway;
Or how the pale-faced Sister of the Day,
When in her increase, can her horns unite,
Till they contract into a full-orb'd light;
Why, of the Winds, the Seas the better get;
Why Eurus blows, and Clouds are always wet;
Why the Hand answers to the Mind's intent;
What is the Mind; what the Omnipotent;

What Day the World's great fabric must o'erthrow ;*
Let them inquire, who can these Secrets know.

A certain degree of understanding is requisite to enable a man to know that he is ignorant;-we must push at a door to know whether it be bolted against us.-Montaigne.

TAKE NOTICE: That the Characters or Symbols of the Signs, and the names of the Companies, have been taken into the above Table, upon the authority of two several Astral Treatises, published in the years 1648 and 1678: Nevertheless, the same hath been performed with such deflections as seem to be proper and necessary to the rectification and true completion of the said Table: And (for the better information of all whom it may concern) in further behalf, and proof of the said Table, (the like whereof hath never appeared before or elsewhere,) the Titles of the said two Astral Treatises referred to, are hereunto scheduled or annexed, as followeth :

TO BELIEVERS IN THE INFLUENCES OF THE HEAVENLY BODIES, AND TO DISCERNING READERS IN GENERAL. I now publish TO THE WHOLE WORLD MY Prognostications FOR 1829; and, these being my first, I think it right to say something in this place respecting myself: whereupon, the candid Reader is referred to the celebrated RABBI TOLLOL'S curious catalogue of one hundred and forty Rare Books, in the magnificent library of St. Victor at Paris, wherein he inserteth one, intituled the Chimney Sweeper of Astrology, which, according to his learn signifieth, that " ASTROLOGERS are generally with the sometimes up, sometimes down, now high, now low, servatories, as the Chimney-Sweepers are with their long poles in the chimnies:" whereunto I annex, in proof of the humility and dignity of Astrologers, that Sir GEORGE WHARTON, of KirkbyKendall, in the county of Westmorland, in his Hemeroscopeion, or Almanack for the year 1654, speaketh thus ;

Fetch me a Ladder, and a Broome, that I

May sweep the cob-webs from the azur'd skie;
Dispatch the fumes that cloud the subtile aire,

And make the Heavens look maiden-smooth and faire :— which said Sir George Wharton, besides his rank, was Paymaster and Treasurer of the Ordnance to his Most Sacred Majesty, of Blessed Memory, King CHARLES II.; and yet it appeareth, by the above lines, that this Baronet of the kingdom, who attained to such high trust, had accounted it to his credit to act, publicly, in the capacity of Housemaid to the Stars: wherefore, as I have also engaged myself in their service, so would I speak with becoming moderation of my abilities and wishes; and therefore I say, that I aspire not to that station in the Celestial Household which was held by his said Majesty's Paymaster and Treasurer; yet, if it please certain of my readers to receive me as a Chimney-sweeper of Astrology, I shall content myself with their acceptance, and as a humble and ready Flue-faker of the Science, be always at command on my annual round, which I purpose not to depart from so long as I shall be living, as I have been for some time past, upon Crackscull Common, the ancient site of a Venerable University, founded before the creation of the valiant Knights of the RoundTable by the noble King ARTHUR, in the memorable days of MERLIN the renowned British Enchanter, whose Cave in Spa-fields, near London, long since opened, and now lately enclosed, was not known either to NIXON, the Cheshire Prophet, or the famous LONDON 'PRENTICE, of whom an effigy still remaineth in Hoggesdon Old Town, near the road formerly leading to the Old Physic Gardens of the late worthy Mr. JOHN TRYON, the ingenious author of the Way to Health and Long Life; the enjoyment of which twofold happiness I heartily wish to my deserving Readers, and therewith I dismiss them to the perusal and study of my ensuing Prognostications.
