manner of the God of the land therefore he hath sent lions among them, and, behold, they slay them, because they know not the manner of the God of the land. Then the king of Assyria commanded, saying, Carry thither one of the priests whom ye 150 brought from thence; and let them go and dwell there, and let him teach them the manner of the God of the land. So one of the priests whom they had carried away from Samaria came and dwelt in Beth-el, and taught them how they should fear the LORD. Howbeit every nation made gods of their own, and put them in 155 the houses of the high places which the Samaritans had made, every nation in their cities wherein they dwelt. And the men of Babylon made Succoth-benoth, and the men of Cuth made Nergal, and the men of Hamath made Ashima, and the Avvites made Nibhaz and Tartak, and the Sepharvites burnt their 160 children in the fire to Adrammelech and Anammelech, the gods of Sepharvaim. So they feared the LORD, and made unto them from among themselves priests of the high places, which sacrificed for them in the houses of the high places. They feared the LORD, and served their own gods, after the manner of the nations from 165 among whom they had been carried away. Unto this day they

do after the former manners.

LESSON LXVI

THE YOUTHFUL PROPHET

Selections from the earlier prophecies of Isaiah,
delivered in the reigns of Jotham and Ahaz.

THE PROPHET'S CALL

ISAIAH III.—VI.

61 In the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and his train filled the temple. Above him stood the seraphim: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet,1 and 5 with twain he did fly. And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts : The whole earth is full of his glory.

And the foundations of the thresholds were moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.

10 said I,

Woe is me! for I am undone ;

Then

Because I am a man of unclean lips,

And I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;
For mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

15 Then flew one of the seraphim unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: and he touched my mouth with it, and said,

Lo, this hath touched thy lips;

And thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.

20 And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then I said, Here am I; send me. And he said,

25

Go, and tell this people,

Hear ye indeed, but understand not;

And see ye indeed, but perceive not.

1 For his feet read his loins.
