upon the inhabitants thereof: for of a truth the LORD hath sent me unto you to speak all these words in your ears. Then said 70 the princes and all the people unto the priests and to the prophets : This man is not worthy of death; for he hath spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God. Then rose up certain of the elders of the land, and spake to all the assembly of the people, saying, Micaiah the Morashtite prophesied in the days of Hezekiah king 75 of Judah; and he spake to all the people of Judah, saying, Thus saith the LORD of hosts: Zion shall be plowed as a field, and Jerusalem shall become heaps, and the mountain of the house as the high places of a forest. Did Hezekiah king of Judah and all Judah put him at all to death? did he not fear the LORD, 80 and intreat the favour of the LORD, and the LORD repented him of the evil which he had pronounced against them? Thus should we commit great evil against our own souls.

20 And there was also a man that prophesied in the name of the LORD, Uriah the son of Shemaiah of Kiriath-jearim; and he 85 prophesied against this city and against this land according to all the words of Jeremiah: and when Jehoiakim the king and all the princes heard his words, the king sought to put him to death; but when Uriah heard it, he was afraid, and fled, and went into Egypt and Jehoiakim the king sent Elnathan the son of Achbor, 90 and certain men with him, into Egypt: and they fetched forth Uriah out of Egypt, and brought him unto Jehoiakim the king; who slew him with the sword, and cast his dead body into the graves of the common people. But the hand of Ahikam the son of Shaphan was with Jeremiah, that they should not give him 95 into the hand of the people to put him to death.

:

36 1 And it came to pass in the fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, that this word came unto Jeremiah from the LORD, saying, Take thee a roll of a book, and write therein all the words that I have spoken unto thee against Israel,1 100 and against Judah, and against all the nations, from the day I spake unto thee, from the days of Josiah, even unto this day. It may be that the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I purpose to do unto them; that they may return every man from his evil way; that I may forgive their iniquity and their 105 sin. Then Jeremiah called Baruch the son of Neriah; and Baruch wrote from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the LORD, which he had spoken unto him, upon a roll of a book. And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, I am shut up; I

cannot go into the house of the LORD: therefore go thou, and read in the roll, which thou hast written from my mouth, the 110 words of the LORD in the ears of the people in the LORD's house upon the fast day:1 and also thou shalt read them in the ears of all Judah that come out of their cities. It may be they will present their supplication before the LORD, and will return every one from his evil way for great is the anger and the fury that 115 the LORD hath pronounced against this people.

9 Now it came to pass in the fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem, and all the people that came from the cities of Judah unto Jerusalem, proclaimed a fast before the LORD. 120 Then read Baruch in the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of the LORD, in the chamber of Gemariah the son of Shaphan the scribe, in the upper court, at the entry of the new gate of the LORD's house, in the ears of all the people. And when Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, had heard out of the 125 book all the words of the LORD, he went down into the king's house, into the scribe's chamber: and, lo, all the princes sat there, even Elishama the scribe, and Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the princes. 130 Then Micaiah declared unto them all the words that he had heard, when Baruch read the book in the ears of the people. Therefore all the princes sent Jehudi the son of Nethaniah unto Baruch, saying, Take in thine hand the roll wherein thou hast read in the ears of the people, and come. So Baruch the son of 135 Neriah took the roll in his hand, and came unto them. And they said unto him, Sit down now, and read it in our ears. So Baruch read it in their ears.

16 Now it came to pass, when they had heard all the words, they turned in fear one toward another, and said unto Baruch, 140 We will surely tell the king of all these words. And they asked Baruch, saying, Tell us now, How didst thou write all these words? Then Baruch answered them, He pronounced all these words unto me with his mouth, and I wrote them with ink in the book. Then said the princes unto Baruch, Go, hide thee, thou 145 and Jeremiah; and let no man know where ye be. And they went in to the king into the court; 2 but they had laid up the roll in the chamber of Elishama the scribe; and they told all the words in the ears of the king. So the king sent Jehudi to fetch the

150 roll and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi read it in the ears of the king, and in the ears of all the princes which stood beside the king. Now the king sat in the winter house: and there was a fire in the brasier burning before him. And it came to pass, when 1 Jehudi had read three 155 or four leaves, that the king cut it with the penknife, and cast it into the fire that was in the brasier, until all the roll was consumed in the fire that was in the brasier. And they were not afraid, nor rent their garments, neither the king, nor any of his servants that heard all these words. Moreover Elnathan and Delaiah 160 and Gemariah had made intercession to the king that he would not burn the roll: but he would not hear them. And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king's son, and Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel, to take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet: but the LORD hid them.

27 Then the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah, after that the king had burned the roll, and the words which Baruch wrote at the mouth of Jeremiah, saying, Take thee again another roll, and write in it all the former words that were in the first roll, which Jehoiakim the king of Judah hath burned. And concern170 ing Jehoiakim king of Judah thou shalt say, Thus saith the LORD : Thou hast burned this roll, saying, Why hast thou written therein, saying, The king of Babylon shall certainly come and destroy this land, and shall cause to cease from thence man and beast? Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning Jehoiakim king of 175 Judah: He shall have none to sit upon the throne of David ; and his dead body shall be cast out in the day to the heat, and in the night to the frost. And I will punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity; and I will bring upon them, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and upon the men of Judah, 180 all the evil that I have pronounced against them, but they hearkened not. Then took Jeremiah another roll, and gave it to Baruch the scribe, the son of Neriah; who wrote therein from the mouth of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire: and there were added 185 besides unto them many like words.

THE BATTLE OF CARCHEMISH

7 Who is this that riseth up like the Nile,
whose waters toss themselves like the rivers ?
Egypt riseth up like the Nile:

and he saith,

[blocks in formation]

5 Wherefore have I seen it ?

they are dismayed and are turned backward,

And are fled, and look not back:

terror is on every side.

Let not the swift flee away,

nor the mighty man escape;

In the north by the river Euphrates,

have they stumbled and fallen.

10 For that day is a day of the LORD, a day of vengeance,

that he may avenge him of his adversaries :

And the sword 1 shall devour and be satiate,

and shall drink its fill of their blood:

For the LORD hath a sacrifice

in the north country by the river Euphrates.

11 Go up into Gilead, and take balm,

O virgin daughter of Egypt:

In vain dost thou use many medicines;

there is no healing for thee.

The nations have heard of thy shame,

and the earth is full of thy cry:

For the mighty man hath stumbled against the mighty,

they are fallen both of them together.

THE FATE OF PHILISTIA

47 2 Behold, waters rise up out of the north,
and shall become an overflowing stream.

And shall overflow the land and all that is therein,
the city and them that dwell therein.

At the noise of the stamping of the hoofs of his strong

ones,

at the rushing of his chariots,

The fathers look not back to their children

for feebleness of hands;

Because of the day that cometh

to spoil all the Philistines,

To cut off from Tyre and Zidon
every helper that remaineth :
For the LORD will spoil the Philistines,
the remnant of the isle of Caphtor.
Baldness is come upon Gaza ;
Ashkelon is brought to nought;
The remnant of their valley :1
how long wilt thou cut thyself?
O thou sword of the LORD,

how long will it be ere thou be quiet ?

Put up thyself into thy scabbard ;

rest, and be still.

How canst thou 2 be quiet,

seeing the LORD hath given thee 3 a charge?

Against Ashkelon, and against the sea shore,
there hath he appointed it.

A CURSE UPON JEHOIAKIM

That useth his neighbour's service without wages,

and giveth him not his hire;

That saith, I will build me a wide house

and spacious chambers,

And cutteth him out windows;

and it is cieled with cedar, and painted with vermilion.
